Stayed 5 nights at the Barcelo Raval 12 to 17th Aug, myself and hubby. Thought we had arrived in the 'Bronx' when the taxi pulled up outside! (always a few taxis outside which was handy) The hotel is very contempory and exactly the same as the pics on the website. We were given a room on 2nd floor, twin beds but large room with bath and shower over. The first night we stayed we didn't have the air con on and the noise from outside from first thing was quite loud. we couldn't get the shower to work so after asking 4 times for it to be looked at we were moved to a slighly smaller room on the 10th floor with a huge bed and big shower (no bath) ,so we were really pleased! There was no noise from the 11th floor outside bar either. One thing I missed though - room was so modern it didnt exactly have a dressing table with a mirror above and plug point - sort of essential for women like me who like to do hair and make up with a mirror close up!
And a 'free' coffee pod thing - only used once, would have just prefered a kettle and coffee sachet!
We stayed bed & breakfast - the buffet style was fresh and quite tasty but exactly the same every morning. There is no waiter service so you make your own coffe etc and no extras from a menu like other hotels offer. It was filling enough, plenty of fruit or mini salad sanwiches etc but just lacking something...not sure if worth the extra cash.
The morning we left was before b'fast started (7am) so the reception organised us a picnic bag to take away with us which was helpful.
The roof top was stunning - the views are 360 degrees, bar a tad pricey but to be expected, the pool very cold and tiny, but fresh towels up there to use daily. Didn't use the downstairs gym area. We had drinks in the bar area outside the hotel but didn't eat lunch or dinner there. All staff we encountered were very friendly.
The Raval area lights up prettily at night, and The Ramblas is not even a 5minute walk. The street behind the hotel was an area for local 'ladies of the night' by the looks and slightly rough. There was a strong police presence though so didn't feel like we couldn't walk around. There were a couple of small supermarkets near and they were an awful lot cheaper for buying pop, water, snacks etc than the ones next to The Ramblas.
This was my 3rd time in Barcelona - loved it again. Very hot, very busy and quite expensive. Would I go back to Barcelo Raval...no don't think so. Convenient location for the Ramblas but with so many hotels to choose from (my favourite so far being the Olivia Plaza) I wouldn't put myself in such an area where we hurried through every day to get to the 'nice parts' - I wouldn't particularly want to walk around the Raval part on my own as a woman.
Did a catamarang boat trip this time with a sax player and jazz music - would recommend as very relaxing 90 minutes. Also garden bar at Miramar Hotel has stunning view of whole of city.

first trip to barcelona. taxi to hotel is E32ish Euro's but to be honest barcelona has one of the best transport networks in europe so i would get the bus. The hotel is situated in the old immigrant quarter of town but only a 10min walk from the ramblas. the whole area is always busy day and night so the 2 routes from the hotel to the ramblas are safe and full of people. yes you do walk through a red-light district but i mean its hardly amsterdam..4 or 5 quiet street girls and 2 bars!!.mingled with shops etc..walked regularly through with my wife and kids..so i wouldn't worry about that.check in very friendly, rooms are for 2 people so we had to have 2 seperate rooms on the same floor, but we knew that when we used our tesco club vouchers. quality of rooms good for 2 people..same standard as ME Madrid type of hotel. excellent view from top floor and bar staff great for a chat. free internet in the lobby so great for emails etc. gym was very modern, great apparatus, breakfast was better than a marriott, fresh food or cooked..to be honest all you want from a hotel is a place to eat breakfast, shower and sleep..used doctor on day2, hotel rang doctor was at hotel within 40mins,E150 charge (ask for receipt),private so eu card no good (makesure you take single trip insurance) pharmancy over the road from hotel..checkout..no worries, taxi rank outside hotel..24minutets away..top tips in barcelona..buy the city tourbus tickets at the tourist info booths..great way to see everything plus you get lots of discount vouchers..always ask for small cokes, drinks in bars as the waiters will bring you a double which costs about 5.60euro's..buy your nou-camp tickets at the tourist info booths avoids the queue at the nou-camp AND if you get the touristbus ticket, you get 15% off from the voucher pack...for lunch dont sit in a bar us one of the pizza cafes/tapas bars as its cheaper..no incidents of petty crime while i was there but my tips are as follows...take a small rucksac and a little pad-lock..I also have a wallet that you connect to your pants/jeans by a chain..check out the cottswold web site..overal BArcelona is safe, friendly and a rather copious evening meal for 4 in a decent resturant with drinks costs a bout 70 to 85 Euro's...

Room Tip: i always ask for a high floor..

Honestly, there is nothing to fault. Spotlessly clean, super modern, well equipped, THE most comfy beds, wonderful food and staff that are very very polite and attentive.

We had read that the area was a little 'risky' and yes, we certainly did feel slightly uncomfortable the first time we found our way to the hotel and walked around; but we encountered absolutely no problems whatsoever during our 5 day stay. Apart from that, the location is spot on.

We would not hesitate to return.

Barcelo Raval was a great hotel. The room was nice, and despite other complaints of the pink lights, you can switch the lights off. The shower is visible to others in the room, so traveling with someone other than a spouse might be uncomfortable. I would definitely recommend going to the top floor to see the full 360-degree view of Barcelona.

From the airport, we took a taxi (26 EU) with two large bags and two carry-ons. Note that you will pay cash in taxis unless the window is up, advertising credit card use.

La Ramblas and metro are easily accessible from this hotel. My wife and I walked to the Columbus Statue for busing to our cruise without any problems. Although the area is nice, I wouldn't recommend lingering around by yourself on the side streets; they can feel a little unsafe. We were able to locate nearby restaurants (within 1/4 mile) and a bakery for inexpensive but tasty meals and breakfast foods.
