A Roman Aqueduct, a castle and a cathedral - what more do you need in a town! We had a fabulous day exploring Segovia. We took the train from Madrid (which was super fast) and then the short bus ride waiting for us just outside the train station into town. It dropped us right in front of the spectacular aqua duct! What a site!! After spending some time seeing the aqueduct from different vantage points (I recommend climbing the stairs to the right) we found the city ramparts and walked along there. Then we visited the cathedral and lastly the castle and walked a different route back to the aqueduct. Both the cathedral and castle (alcazar) were beautiful. The castle didn't take us very long to get through, but it was worth the climb up the tower for the views of Segovia.

Built by the Romans in 1st century A.D. , this aquaduct is one of the few remaining in remnants of Roman architectural excellence in the world. It run along the town of Segovia and can be seen in parts from multiple places. Just get to the Plaza del Azoguejo which gives you the high point and great views of the Aquaduct and Segovia. We took a bus from Madrid to Segovia and visited the place on our own. A number of day trips from Madrid can be booked but since it was quite easy to get to, we didn't see the need. Walking around the streets which are well marked for tourist sights is the best way to get around Segovia. Do visit if you are doing Madrid.

This Aqueduct was built by the Romans during the 1st century AD and is one of the best-preserved structures of its type. It supplied water from the Frío River to the city into the late 20th century and is the foremost symbol of Segovia, as evidenced by its presence on the city's coat of arms. The pillars and arches of the two-story arcades are made of solid blocks of stone fit closely together with little or no mortar, and the lower arches alternate in height according to the structure’s adaptation to the contours of the land. It reaches a height of 28.5m. Its a marvel of lasting construction, a truly spectacular structure.

If you are in the area, the aqueduct is an impressive sight and in wonderful condition. Lighting is not particularly important. We visited during a thunderstorm and the structure appeared quite awesome.
