This is a typical Spanish provincial museum. Not very large nor very well kept. But since the history of Cádiz is so interesting it's worth a visit for an hour or so. We only saw the ground floor. Interesting pieces from Phoenician and Roman times. The Mina square is also a very nice place :)

Well laid out and captioned exhibits, most in English as well as Spanish. A good insight into the past of this ancient port and its value to the area across the millennia.

! wouldn't say this is a "must-see"The museum is a bit outdated compared to many we've been to. However, there are some highlights. Don't miss the pair of Phoenician sarcophagi, which together are regarded as the greatest exhibits on show. The male figure was discovered in 1887, and then the female version much more recently, in 1980. I also liked the statue of Trajan - it can be viewed from ground level and also from an upstairs gallery. I was particularly struck by the serenity of the face. On the first floor you'll find some wonderful expressions of Andalusian religious art, many by Zurbaran (who you will frequently come across in your travels around this region). If you have children in tow they might be intrigued by the display of puppets on the top floor.

Simply, a great museum. Yes,it is small, but that is a good thing. The layout is good. From Phoenicia to modern Cadiz, you will see gigantic statues of Roman emperors, much smaller but better bronze statues, and Zurbarán and Murillo and then interspersed with these wonderful works are modern works that just spice the place up. It's a fun place; something one does not always associate with museums. Don't miss it.

An excellent Museum with a wealth of information about this maritime port of great importance to Spain throughout it's history, many interesting exhibits not just relating to the maritime history of the City but also about the City itself and it's place in history with so much you would not have known.
