This visit to Weimar was very important to us since we were looking for long lost relatives. We chose the Elephant hotel since it was the most interesting Hotel in Weimar as well as in the best location for all the activities we wanted to experience. Everything is within walking distance of the Elephant Hotel.
So many really great restaurants and cafe's are just around the next corner!
Don't miss the entire Hotel history on the second floor! Super informative and very interesting history.
We were so pleasantly surprised with the Hotel in general, the room and location of the room and the entire staff we met as well as their attitude. Smiles and smiles forever! Always ready to help.
Special mention and a great thank you to:
-Katia at the front desk ... we worked with Katia and she helped us with the location of the different archives were we got all the information we came to Weimar for. Thank you Katia!
Katia's college at the front desk that lives in Jena ... at this time we cannot recall your name but you were also outstanding with all the help you provided for us while staying and your hotel. Thank you!
Also thank you to all the people in the restaurants.
People make hotels not the other way around!

Room Tip: Rooms towards the courtyard are quiet.

There has been a Hotel Elephant on this site since the 16th century, but this actual building dates from 1935. It was built by the Nazis at the request of Hitler, who loved it here. Commendably, the hotel has a small exhibition of its own history, and it does not skirt around this. In fact the architect did an impressive job in building something which fits in well with the other buildings around the market square. Equally impressive is the layout and build quality of the interior, which makes for lovely public areas, and great big landings on each floor off which corridors to the rooms lead. The current operators have done a great job in the interior design, which is highly Bauhaus influenced, and the overall effect is very impressive indeed. Let us hope the new owners, Marriott, leave it well alone.
Our room was beautifully designed too in a Bauhaus style and large, with a view over the rear of the hotel, which is largely leafy. The bathroom was large, functional and equipped with a large selection of Elemis products. I guess from the nature of the construction it is not possible to install air conditioning, so I suspect on a hot summer's evening the rooms may get very warm. The only reason I haven't given the place 5 stars is the (understandable) lack of room air con, and a couple of other things I would like to have seen in the room (coffee machine and ironing facility).
The in-house Bierkeller is small by German cellar standards, but very attractive. We didn't eat, but the menu looked good, if quite expensive. The lobby bar is beautiful, the furniture and décor exquisite. The main restaurant is a Michelin starred affair with a Mediterranean theme, which seems a bit odd in Central Germany. We didn't try it, but the room looks gorgeous.
All the staff were unobtrusively efficient, polite and welcoming, as you might expect in a really top quality establishment.
Overall its an excellent hotel with a fascinating history, and if you're making a long trip to Weimar it has to be best the place to stay if it's in your budget.

Room Tip: Standard rooms looked small-ish and overlook an internal courtyard. Pay a bit more and go for a larger externally facing room (or a suite).

Weimar is a center of German culture which notables like Goethe and Schiller called their home. It is also the home of the Bauhaus architecture and lifestyle.

It is a wonderful historic city well worth a visit and it does not get much more historical than the Hotel Elephant. Its location on the central square of town is outstanding and they have ample parking.

Be sure to ask the front desk for the typed history and chronology of this house which dates back to the 15 hundreds.

The hotel was built in the 1930 and was built to the highest standard available at that time. It's current style is clearly influenced by Bauhaus, with high strong focus on functionality.

Everything in the hotel is very well maintained and housekeeping is quite excellent.

The only glaring issue will become obvious in a heat wave - there is no air conditioning and quite frankly it would be prohibitive and invasive to install one.

The strength of the hotel is in the area of food and beverage, this hotel manages some of the restaurants with the best reputation in town. I would strongly recommend the restaurant " Zum Weissen Schwan", a freestanding restaurant managed by the hotel, a short and pretty walk from the hotel.

Breakfast is outstanding and is served in the lovely garden courtyard of the hotel ( weather permitting).

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the square or overlooking the garden

The Hotel Elephant is a delightful stay with a most interesting history. While the room was small, even by European standards, it was comfortable and clean. The strength of the place lies in its terrific food, attentive staff, and great bar.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view!
