“Typically German”
Reviewed 1 November 2011

Imagine a pretty German market place with cobbled stones, a cross and old style buildings. This is it ! Although one building has been rebuilt due to allied bombing during WW2 it has been done sympathetically and will not spoil the experience in anyway. Very nice.

“Nice market area, see if you are in Trier”
Reviewed 23 October 2011

A nice market square, big nice market cross, an actual outdoor market takes place most days, plenty of people about, there is a also selling of alcoholic drinks near the market cross, most folks pretty well behaved. Plenty of restaurants and gelaterias about, both in the Hauptmarkt and in the surrounding streets.

While I wouldn't make a special trip it is very nice, the views over the various buildings and St Gangolf's Church are very pleasant and if in Trier it should not be missed.

“Starting point to discover Trier, and indeed lots to be discovered”
Reviewed 22 October 2011

Epicenter of everything in close proximity. Lively and packed with tourists and locals day and night. At my evening arrival there was an open-air concert taking place and tents servving beer and saucages. In the morning, colorful with sellers of flowers and grocery. In a nice antique shop nearby, I "discovered" a 16th century book with the original ancient Greek text and its translation in Latin. Also a map printed in 1858 showing the frontiers of Ottoman empire in Europe.

“Lots to be seen”
Reviewed 25 June 2011

At the Hauptmarkt is the Judengasse located, the stunning fountains, Steipe, House of the 3 magi, the Saint Gangaolf church, too much to sum up. Therefor it is a very busy place jampacked with tourists, pubs, inns, icecream stands, flower stands, just name it and it will be there. The Main Market became the center of medieval Trier with: the Steipe, the city council's banqueting house, with immediate access to the city church St. Gangolf (through the little baroque gate on the south side, the church itself is completely surrounded by stalls and houses), the official city yardstick (reconstruction) at the Steipe, the pillary (reconstructed on the south end of the market), access to the Cathedral, access to the Jewish Quarter as well as to six streets altogether.

“Lots of shops”
Reviewed 1 May 2011

There are a lot of shops and streets you can walk through. It's good for a few hours. Most of the stand set up are for flowers or vegetables. There are many restaurants around as well.
