Having a café-bar and a theater, the Wohngemeinschaft is not a typical hostel. It’s smartly intended as a café offering some delightful pastries matched with coffee or tea in the morning, then transformed into a bar at night. The central ambiance certainly comes from the lively bar at night with upbeat music, welcoming staff and flowing drinks where locals and visitors joined together. With the spacious theater that can accommodate 60+ seats, guests can surely enjoy the hostels programs – concert, plays or films. Despite having such entertainment indoors, guest liking goes to the beautiful terrace outside.
At first, we thought that the main features of the hostel are the café-bar and its theater. But when a staff toured us around the rooms, we’re surprised to see the uniquely charming rooms! Here, none of the 16 rooms are the same! Each one has its own story and will surely transport you to a different place from a chic photo studio to a trendy Bollywood cinema. They provided us the Mikkel’s Lego room which is a private double room. It comes with a double-bed plus an extra bed which perfectly fit a couple like us or a family of three.
The room was super neat and clean with white walls and bedding. Legos are hanged precisely that the husband tried to play with it! Good thing, there’s a separate table where he can actually create Lego robots! He clearly loves this unique room and as for me I just enjoyed the comfortable feel and sleep soundly in the soft bed.
The continental and hearty breakfast cost €5.50 available in the communal lounge area served from 8 am until 11 am consists of mostly organic products: Bun rolls, German home-made bread, hard boiled eggs, cereals, yogurt, milk, cold meats, several kinds of cheese, spreads and butter. You can opt to have a freshly ground coffee, café latte or cappuccino and tea which are available 24/7. There’s also a fridge with juices and beer available to buy anytime.
Apart from having a café-bar and a theater, the bar area also has a ping-pong table and a quirky fully-converted camper-van!
The hostel also provides a dedicated room in 50’s style decor which is perfect for mixing with other travelers. It has a cozy couch corner with table, a library full of books and a variety of DVDs for free. Also a free luggage storage are available for those arriving before check in at 15:00.
All the staff we met at Die Wohngemeinschaft hostel were friendly and caring. From the warm welcome at the reception up to the moment we leave the hostel door, we felt to be very at home.

Being situated at the heart of the Belgian Quarter which is known as the city’s trendiest neighborhood, the hostel is perfect for first time travelers like us. Dom Cathedral, famous museums, park, public transportation and a lot of plazas can be visited by foot in few minutes. It is also surrounded by café’s, restaurants, clubs and shops so everything seems to be at reach here.

We ended up wanting for more time in Cologne and spending more days in the hostel!

The place is excellent... the tematic is fantastic, location is perfect and also the pricing... We took breakfast option and we were really pleased. The food is great, a nice and tasty German breakfast. I would only recommend to provided better signs to get to the reception. I hated going through the bar like an idiot while everyone was drinking.. that doesn't make any sense... overall the place worth the visit many times...

Stayed for two nights in the room with the legos. It was a really funky room with platform beds and giant windows. Best pillows I've seen in a hotel in a long time. The hostel occupies two floors of a building, with the reception and living room on the 4th floor. I'd probably call it more of a small hotel rather than hostel in terms of vibe. Staff was very helpful. Coffee and tea available around the clock. Access to hostel floors required a key for the elevator, so it felt very secure.

Location wasn't super close to main tourist sites, but it was walkable, and public transport close.

My only complaints are that the close toilet was often occupied, and I wish there was a microwave or fridge available. But really cool place and good value overall.

I stayed 1 night in the 8 bed dorm and 1 night in a private single room. Best things about the place:

-beautifully decorated and clean
-plenty of showers/toilets to share, even a bathtub on floor 6!!
-the shared dorm room was seriously impressive. Privacy curtain, massive comfortable bed, individual power plug/light/shelf/lockable bag storage.
-great location, cool area of town. Lots of awesome/cheap restaurants around, eg Ni Hao is great for Asian food
-friendly and helpful staff
-free tea and coffee 24/7 in lounge room
-awesome, fast wifi

Only downside is no kitchen facilities. Even just a microwave/small fridge in the 'living room' area would be a great help!

Overall just an awesome place, highly recommend.
