We recently visited friends in Berlin. We stayed for nearly two weeks. From what the staff said on check in, this was a bit longer than the usual guests who stay for a couple days and move on.

First, the hotel is right on the M1 / M12 street care route. Easy access to the centre of Berlin, and specifically, Alexanderplatz. If you are going anywhere, you can likely get there from Alexanderplatz! Certainly, with a Tourists Package (available at the information bureau at Alexanderplatz for about 50€) you get unlimited travel in the A and B spooned of Berlin. For the record, the only place we travelled to that was zone c was Sachenhausen Concentration Camp via rail. Even outside of the centre of the city, your pass will work. BUT, if you venture out to Zone C, you MUST get a supplemental ticket. Don't get the "reduced rate" ticket: it isn't stated, but it is a child's ticket. This isn't expressed on the ticket machine either in English or German. We got tagged by a transit policeman and we were clearly in the wron: he gave us a passs, ie walked on but be careful. Willful transit fare evaiders (so called 'Black Riders') are not tolerated.

In fact, to this point, you need to know that most of the officials on the transit system are plain clothes. The seem to prey on tourists and get a commission for each fare evader they catch. 60€ per person! Ouch!! But there are scammers on the system who demand cash payments on the trains. They often flash ID, with their expiry dates covered... DONT PAY! Politely ask for their ID, take a quick cell phone picture of the person asking for immediate payment, and they will likely leave you alone. If they are legit, they will issue you a ticket.

Ok, back to the hotel. I was first put off by the lack of AC. With the windows open and the fan on, it was fine. We also eat once in their 'continental breakfast' suite. It was ok, but we tended to eat across the street. There are a lot of places to eat/buy sunderies including a place nearby that is open very late. Can't recall the name, but it's on the hotel side, walking left after leaving the hotel. If you like beer, you've come to the right place! Beer is often cheaper than bottled water!

So, the rooms are nice. They have elevator service to the fourth floor. They have parking and you can dine on sight. What's not to love.

I can't give it 5 stars, because it's not that level of hotel/pension. That being said, we were very satisfied!

Dear Douglas G.,

Thank you for your kind review for our Hotel Kastanienhof.

Well, it seems like you had an adventurous situation with the public transportation system in Berlin.
For your next stay with us: buy the tickets at our reception! The staff are loacals and they advise you the best fares and sell you the public transportation tickets, as well as the "Berlin Welcome Card".

Regarding the room: we do have rooms with air-conditioning (Deluxe rooms).

We are actually improving our breakfast buffet at the moment. Starting the next days we will serve you scrambled eggs, bacon, more fruit choices and more.
And we even keep the price low with only 9 € per person (including unlimited coffee and tea).

Next time you should try to drink a beer and dine in our German restaurant "Ausspanne".
We serve food and drinks at its best!

Thank you for staying with us in Berlin.

We hope to welcome you again soon.

With kind regards,

Clemens Lendt

We enjoyed a wonderful 4 night stay at the Hotel Kastanienhof on our first visit to Berlin. The hotel is centrally located in a very nice neighborhood with many shops and restaurants close by. The breakfasts were excellent too!

Very well located hotel on Kastienallee close to a wealth of cafes, restaurants, trendy shops and bars. Area is busier at 11PM than 11AM. Hotel is efficient with quite large rooms that are clean and well furnished. Our room for four nights was on the front so we could hear the trams which run to midnight and start about 4AM (but make it convenient for getting around city). Swings and roundabouts. Didn't disturb us. Didn't eat at hotel as breakfast was extra and lots of nearby cafés offer good breakfasts. Appears to be only hotel in immediate surrounding area and would recommend at rate of @100 Euros per night. Only niggles were having to pay each time you use the room safe and providing kettle but no coffee, tea etc.

Dear Ian G,

Thank you very much for the great review of our Hotel Kastanienhof.

It is a pleasure to see, that you had such a good and convenient stay with us in Berlin.

Yes, you will hear the tram as soon as they drive faster than they should. This is the reason we have installed noise reducing windows in each room facing the street.

Next time you should try our breakfast buffet, as we are right now planing it newer and more modern (b.e. bacon and scrambled eggs will be available), while the price with only 9 € is a fair deal in our surrounding.

In fact, we are also renewing our safes, that step by step, we will get off the few safes with the 1 € payment.

We will talk about the coffee and tea bag sitution with our management team, to check if we can improve on that point for our guests.

We hope to welcome you again soon in Berlin.

Clemens Lendt

Nice hotel located at Kastanienallee in Mitte. Room was good size and very clean. No airco and busy street so noisy if you sleep with open window. There's a minibar available and drinks are not expensive.

Dear Wendy V,

Thank you very much for your kind review for our Hotel Kastanienhof in Berlin.

It is great to see, that you had a nice stay with us and that rooms very big-sized and clean.

We do have rooms in our hotel with air-condition. They are located in the 5th floor and belong to the Deluxe category.

Further, we do have noise reduced windows in our hotel, to keep away the urban sounds.
Indeed, when you sleep with windows open, you will recognize, that you are in the middle of Germanys biggest city.

Thank you for mentioning our affordable minibar, which is equiped with some Berlin specialities.

We would like to welcome you again soon.

What a fun place to start our Rick Steves' Berlin tour. The hotel is in a good neighborhood, safe. It's close to transportation hubs. We enjoyed a typical regional food menu at the restaurant our first evening - great job to the Chef and his helpers. Breakfast is simple - breads, fruits, yogurt, cereal, meat/cheeses. Rooms are nice and clean. Even though we're on a busy street, the street noise wasn't too bad. Free wifi was appreciated. Our room has a desk, a table, two closets, a minibar/fridge. Bathroom is adequate. Comfortable! You can also relax outside with a drink from the bar if you want to people watch!

Great to see that your stay with the Rick Steves Berlin Tour was a full success.

We are glad that the German buffet the first night was a good start for the tour and we will forward the compliments.
