We enjoyed three nights at the Hotel Kastanienhof. The building is not new, but everything was updated and worked great. It was very comfortable and quiet at night. It was quite easy to find. We arrived at the Hauptbahnhof and took a local train two stops to Hackescher Market. Then it was super easy to get on tram M1 with a stop immediately south of the train platform. Three stops later, at Zionskirchplatz,we were dropped off directly in front of the hotel.
In addition the neighborhood is tremendous. There were very literally dozens of restaurants within a 5 minute walk with a huge variety of fare. The biggest problem was deciding which to enjoy.
We were there during cool, comfortable weather. We didn't see any air conditioning so it might be a little bit uncomfortable if it is hot.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the back. Ours was super quiet.

This hotel was centrally located and close to public transportation. They were very helpful with directions and using the tram. They also had a laundry service that was helpful since we had been traveling for a while. We highly recommend this hotel.

We enjoyed the Kastanienhof, located in East Berlin. The rooms were very comfortable and clean and well appointed. The breakfast was very good. We suggest requesting a room toward the back as there is a tram stop right out front. The tram, though, makes travel into Berlin to see the sights very easy; the hotel will sell you passes. There are several good restaurants and pubs within walking distance. This hotel is an excellent choice for your travels. We highly recommend it.

This is a small, family owned hotel in the former east Berlin, now a very trendy part of town. The area is a great place to experience cosmopolitan Berlin and to people-watch. A wide variety of restaurants are within easy walking distance. The hotel is right on a tram line, which is very convenient. However, rooms facing the street can be very noisy at night because of the trams. Rooms facing away from the street are much quieter.

The rooms are typical European size, very clean. Mattresses are very soft, which seems typical for Germany. Staff are friendly and helpful and generally speak English well. We had desk fans in both our rooms (we had to change rooms due to noise from the street), so I presume there is no air conditioning, and the rooms were quite hot. This should not be a problem most of the year, though.

Room Tip: choose a room that does not face the street if you want to sleep well at night!

The hotel is clean and kept up. Very comfortable. The location is nice. There's a tram stop almost in front of the hotel and you're very close to the center of town. I give it a four ratings instead of five because of their wifi wasn't working. I could connect, but it wouldn't give me access to the internet. I talked with others in the hotel, they were going to near by cafes to use services elsewhere because of the same problem.

Room Tip: If it's warm and you've going to have a window open, get a room on the backside away from th...
