In the midst of the quaint homes and adjacent to the the town square is Burgarten (Castle Park) a large lovely public park for strolling. You get to it by going to the town square area and then through an enormous medieval door that opens into the park.

It is not a place for playing soccer, or for shouting games, there is no playground or sandbox, but my children enjoyed being in the “wilderness”, playing hide & seek behind the many trees, skipping along the paths, etc. The park is a large grassy area, with trees, a paved path and a stone wall, a small picturesque house, and lovely views. There are benches scattered around. There were very few people when we were there. My 2 children picked up some sticks and did a bit of pretend sword fighting, all in the name of good fun. It was perfect for them in that it was relatively quiet play, they could let off some of their steam while outside, and I could keep my eye on them while enjoying the outdoors in this picturesque bit of greenery right next to the town square and shops. I understand that the castle is lit up at night and is quite lovely for an evening stroll.

As other reviewers have said, it's a good place to go and chill out a little. Also the views of the surrounding valley are good.
It was sad to read about the fate of some Jews in the 12th Century, who were trying to escape from a local maniac. They hid in the castle, only to be turned over to the madman by the locals

Alas, history, it seems, has a habit of repeating itself :-(

The Rothenburg Imperial Castle (circa 1142) was located in what is today called the Castle Garden. The Castle was destroyed in the earthquake of 1356. The only surviving building, the prison was rebuilt (circa 1400) by Mayor Toppler into the Chapel of St. Blaise. The garden is very large and very beautiful as well as romantic, day and night. The outer path along the garden wall offers outstanding views of the pastoral valley surrounding Rothenburg as well as of the town itself. The end of garden is a good place to watch the sunset.
