My husband and I stayed at the Steigenberger for a long holiday weekend in early June. Although this was our first stay at the Steigenberger, we have stayed in the near vicinity several times and think it’s a great area just outside the busy parts of the city. In summary, it gets two thumbs up due to its quiet location, the wellness area, and nice breakfast. We would definitely stay again.
LOCATION: The hotel is located in Munich’s Schwabing area on a very quiet, beautiful tree-lined street with several hotels in the near vicinity. We actually prefer Schwabing compared to around the old town area (stayed around Karlsplatz three times). Even though it is in a less touristic area and doesn’t have a lot nearby, it’s easy to get to those touristic areas. We would highly recommend the Steigenberger (and Schwabing in general) to those who have their bikes with them or plan to rent bikes, people who are comfortable with traveling by subway/train/tram around Munich, and those who want to spend more time at the English Garden.
The hotel is a 500 meter walk to the Nordfriedhof U-Station (underground/subway). From there, it is an 8-minute ride straight to Marienplatz in the center of old town (U6 comes every 10 minutes) with stops in between at key city points of Münchner Freiheit and Odeonsplatz. You can buy a day pass for about €12 that allows full usage of the public transportation in the “Innenraum” for up to a group of 5 (it’s about €6 for a single person, but there are also multi-day passes if staying longer or one-time ride tickets). It is an easy cycle to any of the beer gardens in the English Garden (Seehaus 2km away; Chinese Tower and Aumeister 3.5 km away on opposite ends). The Seehaus is our favorite as it’s right next to a large lake and it’s a main reason we opt to stay in Schwabing.
BREAKFAST: The hotel breakfast is wonderful with a large selection of warm options (pancakes, sausage, bacon, potatoes, the traditional Bavarian Weißwurst with pretzel, and a made-to-order egg/omelet station), as well as fresh fruits, musli, yoghurt, sliced hams, cheeses, and pastries. On weekends and holidays, breakfast is available from 6:30-11:00 and I believe it ends at 10:30 on other days. It is quite pricey at about €30 per person, but if you get a great deal with breakfast included it is very nice. Otherwise, there is also a Müller bakery (Müller&Höflinger according to Google Maps) 300 meters away towards the Nordfriedhof U-Station. We passed by just to take a look and they had plenty of breakfast breads, pastries, and sandwiches. They are open M-Sat quite early from 6:30 and from 8:30 on Sun, so no worries if a €30 breakfast isn’t your thing. Also, if you’re headed to Marienplatz there are lots of restaurants and bakeries in the old town and quick options at the Marienplatz train station.
WELLNESS AREA: For a city hotel that is not marketed as a spa, it has a wonderful wellness area with a finnish sauna, bio sauna, steam bath, and plenty of chairs and loungers to relax. On weekends and holidays, the sauna area is open from 10:00-22:00 and on other days it’s 15:00-22:00. Due to its great operational hours, we were able to enjoy the city and had some time in the evenings to relax in the sauna.
PARKING AND BIKE STORAGE: The hotel has a large underground parking garage for €25 per night. However, we would recommend looking in the surrounding area for free street parking. We like the Schwabing area because of this and we have always found free street parking. This time was no exception and while it’s not guaranteed, it is definitely possible. It only took us a couple of minutes to find an empty space that was about 100m from the hotel entrance (even on a long holiday weekend).
We had our bikes with us and although they don’t have a bike storage room, we could park our bikes down in the garage and just use a parking space (no fee). The only difficult part was getting in and out of the garage as the ticket system didn’t always recognize us since we didn’t have a car and we couldn’t get the gate open. We tried a few times and it would eventually work, but on our last night we had to call the front desk with the garage call box as we just couldn’t get it to recognize us.
