My wife and I stayed here for our first evening of a 2 week European tour. We decided on the interior room (#19 I believe) without an outside view and found it to be very comfortable and clean. The lack of an outside window didn't bother us since we went to bed around 9pm and wanted complete darkness to get our body clocks synched. The location was perfect for walking and touring with several restaurants close by. The staff were very nice and the breakfast that was prepared was excellent. If we get the chance to visit Heidelberg again, there is no doubt we would stay here again.

We chose to visit Heidelberg because of its history and chose Gasthaus Backmulde because it seemed charming and located in the old town. What we didn't realize was that the weekend we were there was "Heidelberg Herbst" - the city's fall festival. This meant that downtown streets were blocked off and rather than the spirit of 19th century German romanticism, we were surrounded by crowds listening to bad Rolling Stones cover bands.
We finally found the hotel, but ended up parking in the public garage even though the woman at the front desk gave me a note to show to he guards who blocked off the entrance. (Having seen how tiny the hotel parking area was, I think we made the right choice.)
Our room was on the ground floor, in what was obviously a newly built wing. It was large, modern, and accessible, with grab bars, wide shower, etc. Although I applaud the hotel for having a room like this, it wasn't exactly the atmosphere we were looking for. (And given that there were a lot of stairs to reach the reception desk, I did wonder how someone mobility impaired would ever be able to check in.) The room also overlooked the parking lot, so combined with the concerts, it was far from quiet.
Breakfast was OK, though the room set-up was awkward, with juices and plates right at the entrance, causing a bottle-neck. We did eat dinner one night in the restaurant, which was calm, quiet, and very pleasant.
Under non-festival conditions and with a room with a little more character, the Backmulde would be fine. The location was certainly good. But our experience was disappointing.

Stayed at this hotel for three nights. Nicely appointed good sized room (no air-conditioning, unfortunately). Hotel is literally a one minute walk from the main pedestrian zone and very close to Old Heidelberg's main attractions and tourist area. Extremely nice and helpful staff. Very good value for money.

Difficult one this - we have returned from a four-week tour of Europe and have had fabulous accommodation wherever we have been and this place definitely has strengths: young woman on reception fabulous and gave us sound advice, directions and moved her car for us on the car park. Lovely room for breakfast and, again, great service and choice. We did book this one on a cheaper rate and so do be aware, as another reviewer has mentioned, that room 19 seems to be that budget room - clean and good facility but you have to keep the curtains closed at all times as it looks out onto a corridor with someone else's room door across from the window. I have never seen anything like it before to be honest. Did it affect our stay or sleep - not really no but I would not like to stay more than a night in it.
The one aspect that would stop us returning is access to the car park - it is a nightmare to find and we ended up driving down a one-way street! Very tight spaces and you have to reverse out backwards onto the road (it isn't a busy road though). This is obviously not the fault of the hotel and little could be done to improve it I am sure but arriving with a car does take some thinking about.
If you are not driving, then ideal location - few mins walk round the corner to great place/city.

Room Tip: Request to not have room 19 if booking on a budget!

You're dead right in the town center but it's quiet and intimate. You have an option to get airconditioned room - a must during summer months in our changing climate. You have excellent personal service, and even if you're arriving early you have a chance to get your room upon arrival without additional charge (not a common feature these days)! You have an option to gain some weight (if desirable of course) during nice breakfast in the morning. Finally, the prices aren't cheap but reasonable.
