Picked this hotel by Trip Advisor reviews and it was a winner. Exceptional value for the money. Numerous touches made this feel special including the decorating following a literary theme (owing to the university), well-appointed amply sized rooms, complimentary beverages at check-in, treats at the front desk and great breakfast. Highly recommended.

Just come back from a 4-night stay at this lovely hotel. I've seen some negative reviews and cannot understand this. The staff were very welcoming when we arrived, offering us a welcome drink. We also had restaurants recommended to us and a roof top terrace bar, and we were given a map to find our way around and the recommended places were marked on for us.

We visited 2 of the restaurants and they were excellent, and we also went to the roof top bar, which had fantastic views over Freiburg.

ALL the staff in the hotel were very friendly, and helpful. The rooms were clean and plenty big enough. The breakfast was nice and was continually replenished.

Just returned from a 5 day stay at this lovely hotel. We had the apartment room and 2 twins to accommodate our group, and all the rooms were great.
We arrived in Freiberg by train, so the setting was perfect and on arrival the staff were so welcoming and helpful - from offering a welcome drink, to recommending restaurants, of which we ate at 2 of these and answering any questions that we had.
The choice on the breakfast buffet was lovely and there were light snacks and soft drinks available in reception at all times.

We spent five nights here & everything was perfectly fine and adequate. We were a little bit disappointed with the room because we had expected to be accommodated on an upper floor (as requested with the original booking) in order to make the most of the park view. As it turned out, we were on the first floor and most of the view was really of the street behind the hotel. The breakfast was very good value for money but without highlights & became a little bit boring as the week went on. I believe the staff in Reception did their best, and the majority were very helpful and friendly, but again we were disappointed when we discovered on our last but one day that Freiburg offers a three-day Welcome Card ticket that gives you a discount on tram and bus travel throughout the region, including the Schauinsland funicular. Why weren't we told about this on Day One?! All that said, we tend to be pretty independent, and if you are looking for a reasonably-priced, central, convenient, clean, safe, decent, middle-ranking hotel without frills (apart from plenty of books in the rooms and corridors), then this will serve you very well. It is fine, but it doesn't stand out in any way. We would be very happy to stay here again.

I am really not sure why this hotel has so many good reviews.

There is an underground car park, but it is very small. You therefore need to book in advance to be sure of a space, which is not specifically mentioned on the website. What is also not mentioned is that you need to have at least 16cm (safer is 18cm) ground clearance at the front of your car to get down the ramp. There is however, a very nice chap who will come and measure your clearance and guide you down the ramp.

The rooms are small, as are the bathrooms. Everything is however nice and clean.
Noise can be a problem, but that is pretty much true of all hotels in Freiburg city (if it's not traffic or loud people, the church bells will get you).

The breakfast room is small and not big enough for the number of tables. You sit very close together, which is not the most pleasant way to have breakfast. The food is OK, but nothing more than you would expect in this price category.

The Hotel location is pretty good, between the rail station and the old town and you can reach pretty much everywhere by foot.

Now we come to the critical point - service.
The young lady on reception at check-in was not exactly the friendliest I have experienced. In fact, I would say she was just downright rude. She seems to complain about everything - address format was wrong (sorry if English Addresses have the house number in front of the street name and post code after the city name), that not all the guest had ID (despite swearing to the contrary, it is not the law in Germany that you have to carry ID at all times - you have to have ID, but there is no requirement to have it with you at all times). The hotel also has an odd rule about not taking the key with you when you go out. An odd rule that is easy to forget and for which there are good and bad ways to remind guests - shouting is not one of the good ways. Maybe she had just had a bad day, but it should never happen that she takes that out on the customer.

The rest of the staff (breakfast, checkout, garage) were all nice and friendly, as one would expect from the very friendly city of Freiburg.

For this hotel I would normally have given 3 or maybe a 4 on a good day. However, the checkin experience doesn't allow better than a 2. I also hope that the people who got shouted at for trying to escape with the key, also write a review :-)

Room tip: Ask for a room with air-conditioning - not all rooms have it.
