This run down Mercure hotel charged us 315 euros for a basic room, presumably less than a 100 euros the rest of the year. We understand supply and demand during a football tournament, but this goes way beyond that.
At least the staff had the good grace to look embarrassed when we paid and offered us a " free breakfast".
We are Accor club members too!

Room Tip: Don't bother.

The Mercure Saint Etienne
is one run down , somewhat dilapidated, souless hotel ....Definitely not 4 star in any shape or form & definitely in need of a major refurbishment. Bed was clean which was about as good as it got. Worn discoloured dirty carpet, damp patches on the peeling artex walls & paper coffee cups in the room. Shabby old fashioned corridors with noisy clunking lifts all night (even though my room was relatively far away from the lift). Per other reviews there was only one member of staff on duty & no restaurant service. It cost me €20 euros each way for taxis into town. I booked this hotel on the basis it had a so called rated restaurant (their claim) as being here alone with work I like to have the option of somewhere to eat. Breakfast was mediocre & again no service or staff in sight. Maybe had it been cheap I could have overlooked some of its flaws but at €150 per night I expected much more ...maybe the excessive rate for such a dump is due to the fact the Euro's are currently taking place here? Thankfully due to the euros I couldn't get in for 2 nights as originally planned. Would I recommend? No - unless you get at a bargain price.

I booked to stay here thinking the Mercure's are always a safe bet, but I was wrong! The rooms are outdated and poorly equipped - toiletries are not provided (only a generic bottle of something in the shower) and the only cups provided for tea etc are plastic or paper! Breakfast was disappointing. The whole experience was disappointing!

When we left in the morning the whole hotel had been surrounded by a metal fence - is it being closed down? I provided feedback directly to the hotel but have had no reply.

I was there 2 nights on nov 15 for business.
I booked the room with booking at a really attractive price: 138 € for 2 nights in a 4 stars business hotel is good.
But.....
Room decor and cleaning status of the moquette was not in line with the standard of a 4 stars business hotel. TV only in French language. Breakfast was enough good. Wi fi was really good.

We had chosen this hotel because it had parking, a restaurant and is part of the Accor group that we use constantly. We arrived on Saturday afternoon to find one person on duty; and indeed didn't see any other staff until Sunday. The hotel was drab and in a very run down condition. We parked in the secure underground car park which had also seen better days.
We were informed that the restaurant was closed that night (Saturday!) and that they had texted us that afternoon to tell us. As we were traveling on motorcycles, we didn't get that message until we arrived; and as I had been unwell and was not fit to go out looking for a restaurant. Initially we were told that there was absolutely no chance of food, even room service but once we made it clear that that wasn't an option, the young lady on reception rustled up a salad which she brought to our room.
Very very poor show and certainly NOT an hotel or town we would recommend to anyone!
