We have a friend who is a Paris trained chef and who has travelled the World eating in the finest restaurants and attending International Culinary Conferences. We once asked her which country has the best cuisine. Without hesitation she said, VIETNAM.
So after aimlessly wandering the streets of Orange for 30 minutes, past endless pizza and pasta restaurant, when we saw RESTAURANT LE SAIGON - well need we say more!
The restaurant overlooks the 2000 year old Theatre Antique, so a nice location. We went for probably the cheapest item on the menu; the 3 course special at €14. We had a very tasty chicken based pho (soup) with hugh pieces of chicken floating in it; two different chicken based main courses and a fresh lychee desert. We also bought the cheapest wine on the menu; again €14 per bottle, with a choice of rose or red. We went for the red which was smooth, tannin-free and delightful. So excellent tasty food, excellent wine at a very low cost.
The meal was finished off with a hot towel to cleanse our hands and a complimentary glass of rice wine.
After 4 weeks in France, this was by far the best value meal we have had. The endless hand shaking and signs of recognition were obvious indicators that it was a restaurant favoured by the locals. Need we say more, VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
