Great location, and the proprietor gave us some outstanding advice for restaurants, bars and activities. Rooms are fairly large but rather basic. The breakfast was a great value with very good food and service.

Just the out of the away from the main square to be close with easy access and yet out of the mix for a little quiet. Charming room with quality bath room and shower. All was new and attractive. Breakfast was excellent with home made jams and yogurts. As much coffee as we could drink. The owner went above and beyond to arrange for a bottle of Champagne and some locally crafted chocolates. Easy coordination with excellent and proactive communications. We were welcomed and checked in easily with attention and care. A lovely experience from start to finish. FYI, we took the train in and had we known better, could have walked to the hotel. We took a cab that, because of the street patterns and pedestrian area, was circuitous. We enjoyed the stroll even with roller bags back to the train upon departure.

Room Tip: We were on the ground level and that meant not carrying our luggage upstairs.

The centre of Avignon is traffic free so you can’t drive up outside but it is very convenient for the station as well as the shops, the main square (Place de l’Horloge) and the Palais des Papes. The hotel is old, it’s quite small and has no bar, lounge or restaurant (apart from a small breakfast room). What makes this hotel stand out, as other correspondents observe, are the owners, Stephane and Emmanuelle, who speak perfect English. When you arrive you are given a virtual tour of the town, with Stephane pointing out on the map the places you should visit, and how to get there including les illuminations at the Palais des Papes, and Villeneuve Lez Avignon (no, I haven’t misspelt it) over the river. They will also recommend restaurants and book them if you wish (Avenio was our favourite).
Our room on the ground floor – a standard room – was rather dark as you would expect being on a narrow street. However the artificial lighting was good both in the bedroom and bathroom. The latter is actually a shower room with a good walk in shower. Breakfast was interesting. Nothing cooked (except hard boiled eggs) but there is fresh fruit, homemade yogurts, compotes and rice pudding. There is a rather uninspiring cabinet of cold meats and processed cheese (surely you can do better than that in France?) but lots of homemade cakes.
There were only 2 downsides. First, there were no drawers in the bedroom and just half a shelf for clothes (the other half had the safe on it). Apart from hanging space in the wardrobe, you had to leave your clothes in the suitcase. A small chest of drawers would be a good investment. Secondly the wi-fi was maddening as one had to log in again with user name and password every time you wanted to access it. All in all however this hotel was just right for our needs over 4 nights.

Room Tip: Higher is lighter
