very pleasant and comfortable place in the central part of a lively small city. Located in the 17th-18th-century part but only 5 minutes away from the heart of the medieval Aix. Excellent place to stay when visiting Aix-en-Provence

This hotel is a two star, but it is in an excellent location. Imagine walking out of the hotel everyday into a beautiful 12 century street with a museum and historic church only a few steps away. The hotel is very basic - you get what you pay for. The people at the front desk are helpful and very nice.

Room Tip: Basic hotel - good price - excellent location.

Last September-October my parents and I took a trip through Provence. Aix was our last stop, and in all the other cities and towns we had wonderful experiences with lodging. My father had booked this hotel behind the rest of the families back based on Fodor's Choice and Trip Advisor reviews. We were staying at the fantastic Chateau de Mazan in small hamlet of Mazan when my mom and I found out that my dad had booked hotel Cardinale. Reluctantly we agreed to give it a try. We arrived, completely exhausted around 11PM and could not drive to the front of the hotel because it is in the old historic area that is blocked off to vehicles (unless you are a resident). So we schlepped our luggage on the cobble stone streets to hotel cardinal. We walked in and found it to be incredibly drab, dated, and dirty looking. An incredibly unfriendly gentlemen was at the front desk, and told us that we did not have the large apartment style room we had originally booked for our stay there, and that we could only have that room the following evening. He gave us our keys and we got into a rickety elevator. It brought us to a floor with dark carpeting, narrow hallways, that looked like a run down boarding house from Dickensian London. We walked down a very narrow hallway with paintings of cockroaches to a room that resembled an alpine ski chalet...albeit a 1 star ski chalet. Very strange look for a hotel in the South of France, no? The carpet and bedding looked so dirty that we immediately decided we could not spend the night at this hotel. We went down to complain to the less than friendly man at the front desk. He said that we would not find another hotel room at this house in all of Aix-en-Provence. He was clearly lying because I immediately went on my phone, looked on expedia and found many hotels had openings, even at that hour. We would have rather slept in the car than this very dirty, depressing, and unwelcoming hotel. We ended up at the wonderful Le Pigonnet. All is well that ends well.

We enjoyed our two night stay in Aix and Hotel Cardinal. Hotel Cardinal is situated south of Cours Mirabeau in Quartier Mazarin, the quartier is built in the end of 17th and the beginning of 18th century. Try to wander around in the neighbourhood, it is like to hop two centuries back in time. The rooms of the Hotel Cardinal are furnished with good taste, the owner works in Granet museum and has an eye for beauty. The hotel succeeds in combining old times and modern, friendly atmosphere. Wi-fi works well and the neighbourhood is silent at nighttime. A charming place to stay near the railway station and Cours Mirabeau, the most famous thoroughfare of Aix.

The hotel is charming with a South of France character. The hotel is operated by a nice and friendly staff. The hotel is located opposite of Musée Granet and only a few steps away from the busy city center. Cars can be left in close by parking lots. Our room was clean and on the ground floor, in annex facing the street, but was not noisy as the street is not very busy. Price was moderate, but not cheap. We would always recommend staying here.
