This is a one star hotel with a great location! The price for what you get at hotel Paul is very good value! You get a very basic room, towels changed every other day, a quaint little garden to relax in during a break in the day, and courteous desk service. We read about other reviews that were unhappy about the service, but we found the owners to be accommodating. We would stay at Hotel Paul again, because it has everything you need while travelling. The location is right next to a neighborhood, but also near a non traffic street, with grocery stores, several bakeries, and beautiful squares in which to relax for a coffee or drink. The daily market in the square is excellent! For the budget conscious traveler, this is a great find! Breakfast is available at 5 euros each, but we chose to have breakfast in the nearby cafes.

Room tip: Try to get a room off the main street.

I really liked this hotel. Aix has the best food market; we would buy fantastic fruits, cheeses, breads, tapanades, etc. and eat lunch or dinner in the beautiful garden, breakfast was lovely there too. Wifi was free and worked well, we stored our luggage with no problem, paid with credit card, no problem. There were no twin beds left in Aix so we took the 3 bed room which were two attached rooms and gave us lots of room to spread out. Very comfortable. It cost the same as a twin would have. I did not understand the 1 star rating. You are at the gate of the city, 5 min walk to the cathedral, and the rest of the city is there. Also Chagall's Atelier is a 12 minute walk. Many buses stop in front of the hotel, as does the minibus. Grocery, bakery , bank nearby at corner? You must call if you check in after 8 pm. I do not get some of the negative reviews listed here.

Room tip: Triple room comfy.

Since I usually stay in cheaper hotels, the fact that this one star establishment offers a basic (but spacey) room with only “absolutely-needed” amenities does not constitute a problem for me. What put me off there was the owner’s attitude. If asked for holding my luggage for a few hours during the day after a usual obligatory “check-out before 11 am”, they stated it was not possible for this was Sunday and the whole hotel was simply closed until 6 pm as Sunday is “le jour de repas” (“an off day”). An interesting approach if run a hotel in the city center, isn’t it? What am I supposed to so with two heavy bags, then? – That’s my problem! They don’t care.
At a check-out, I got confronted with yet another French-style nonsense. I suddenly spotted a piece of shocking information put up at the reception desk, saying they don’t accept credit cards. Obviously, my booking confirmation clearly said all major credit card systems were accepted by this hotel. Since I did not even have enough money to pay in cash (and was already pissed off by the luggage problem, as described above), I simply ignored what I have just read and gave the receptionist my credit card to pay with. Imagine he did not say a word of protest, neither was there any problem in paying. It went smooth and normal! Conclusion: don’t pay too much attention to the rubbish they try to talk you into, just act as you please and it’s eventually THEIR problem to obtain the money for their service.
All in all, I reckon for some 55 euro a day (not such a big bargain for a one star hotel, I suppose) one can expect slightly more than a basic standard combined by a merely basic need-to-do attitude.

Very good location.
Rooms are clean, but could use a bit of renovation.
Breakfast is 5€ per person, but you have to pay for a glass of orange juice an extra 1€.
Receptionist speaks good English.
No credit cards accepted!

We've now stayed in three areas in aix and this is by far the best location. Only 5-10 minutes walk to place richelme.
The room is dated but it is clean and the bed was fine. The reception was also fine. Can't comment on breakfast as we didn't have it.
My only concern is the noise in the morning from the hallway as it woke us up every day. I believe it was the cleaners talking.

I would stay here again as the location was unbeatable.
