Stayed here as it was right beside the bus to Puy du Fou and they were amazingly friendly with the kids. Very nice comfortable rooms. The location is great too as you leave the train station and it's almost the first place you see.

If you're traveling by train, you can't be more conveniently located: just walk across from the train station itself. The staff are friendly and kind, and go out of their way to help you, from dining suggestions to maps and advice about tours.

This hotel has it positives, but also some negatives. However, the friendly and charming staff made the stay a great pleasure. The location is excellent, as it is just opposite the railway station and so close to the town centre that you can easily reach anything on foot in 5 minutes. It is not a new hotel, but some renovation has taken place, making it comfortable. New windows have been inserted, so you don't hear any traffic noise from the busy square outside. On the other hand, the walls are so thin, you can easily hear people in the next room, which can be quite annoying. The bathroom facilties had also been renovated. Although the bathroom is very small, it has all the facilities you need. The room itself was fine, with shelves and a small table. But there was no air-condition, so as the temperature was up to 30 degrees C or more outside, the room was extremely hot. Opening the window is a possibility, but then you have all the traffic noise. During night it worked though. Sleeping quality was fine with broad beds. There is free wifi, which works well. The breakfast was adequate, although a bit limited in choice. The rooms are clean and room maintenance was good. Check-in and -out was also quick and efficient, and as already said, the staff was very nice, helpful and service-minded!

I have just returned from a one night business visit to this hotel.
Located directly opposite the Railway Station its location could not be better. The welcome at check in was simply wonderful. It is the only hotel anywhere in the World that has a seat directly in front of the check in which is gold dust for those of us with mobility issues. I knew that from this point on the Hotel staff would be helpful and attentive. I was right ! They made my brief stay so pleasant and helpful.
This is not a modern hotel and if you 'judge a book by its cover' you might say probably just about 3 star but we all know you should never do that.
The rooms are marvellously comfortable although basically furnished but are clean and spacious and have television and a small but well equipped bathroom complete with hair dryer. What more do you want or need? A good nights sleep? Well, you certainly get that! I nearly slept in I was so comfortable.
The Breakfast was all you need too, no hot food but a choice of cereals, bread and preservatives and some cold meats and cheese all served up in a spotlessly clean and spacious dining area.
I am warming to these smaller hotels and not because they offer such good value for money but they also give you a warm welcome and make you certain that they actually value your business.
The Grand Hotel de la Gare will certainly be top of my list of hotels next time in Angers.

I recently spent one night at Grand Hotel de la Gare on a business trip to Angers. On the positive side the location is excellent, close to the city center, tourist attractions and opposite the train station. However, although the hotel is in the 3-star category - similar to Novotel or Mercure hotels in France - expect something basic for which a 2-star ranking would be more appropriate. Narrow entrance stuck between a restaurant and an insurance broker, very small lobby, squeaking floors, elevator out of service, bulky cast iron radiators, the property looks old despite a mostly superficial renovation. Room equipment is basic: no minibar, no air conditioning, no safe, a small TV screen, a very small desk with an old wood chair. Tiny bathroom, however probably the most modern part of the room. Breakfast - only offering limited options - is served on the first floor in a gloomy and cheaply furnished room. Although Grand Hotel de la Gare is certainly OK for travelers looking for basic accommodation there are certainly better places to stay in Angers.
