First impression is of a delightfully quirky building in a lovely location. The actuality does not disappoint.
The staff were unfailingly friendly & helpful.
The only mild drawback was that we were booked into a room in the annexe attached to the main building. It was perfectly adequate, nicely decorated, cosy and comfortable; the slight downside was that (due, obviously, to design constraints dictated by the layout of the building), instead of a conventional en-suite bathroom, the washbasin was in the bedroom and the shower and wc were housed in two separate cubicles. However, that was no more than a mild inconvenience. On the plus side, the room rate was lower than any other comparable hotel in the area. Also, the view of the garden was lovely.
Where this establishment really shines is the food. The quality is first rate and the portions are, to say the least, generous. As far as breakfast is concerned, anyone opting for the "full English" (or the veggie equivalent) would need very little else to keep them going through the day! For dinner, the menu compares favourably with any of the other Rye restaurants that I researched, and the prices are either about the same or cheaper.
Overall, this was a great place to stay; convenient for the lovely town of Rye and an ideal base for exploring further afield in the beautiful Weald countryside. It will be our first choice if we visit the area again.
