I chose this place for a special birthday and it lived up to all my expectations. The service was beyond beyond. In addition to fulfilling ever whim, they even helped us make reservations for our next stop in Montevideo.

The food was among the best I have had anywhere. Frances knows how to creat the perfect, intimate resort. Sheltered behind renovated colonial architecture, the hotel features cozy places to sit, eat, drink, a swimming pool and quiet dark bedrooms. While you sit against soft cushions sipping tea in the living room reading poetry, you can listen to the cooks working to prepare your next meal. The plumbing is a little funky but nothing to deter one from making this a destination.

The cost of the room while very expensive includes everything and they are casual about check in, check out and extra snacks and meals. I would visit again in a heart beat.

This hotel in La Garzon is a serious hotel/restaurant, meaning the owner is very experienced in hospitality, as he has top restaurants in Buenos Aires, NYC, and the Hamptons (never been there though I certainly know they do not suffer fools), not to mention the restaurant he closed in Jose Ignacio (the owner feels the environment in La Garzon is more suited to rest and relaxation, compared to the feverish pace in Jose Ignacio). Though my wife and I did not stay at the hotel, as we were prebooked in Jose Ignacio, I agree with the original writer, you must book in advance), I want to add here that the restaurant is amazing. Probably some of the best food and wine I have ever had! This town probably has a population of 100, and it reminded me of a western movie, when folks look out the window as you approach the well maintained main square. Its worth the visit, and $300 for lunch was too! The hotel only has 5 or so rooms (we were provided with a tour), each is beautiful and in my opinion would be in a five star hotel. The room price includes meals, a big plus as there are few options for eating elsewhere, though another quality restaurant on the square (a pal of the owner) has relocated here too. The bummer is the rooms have a musty smell and restaurant flys (this is the country so this should be expected). This part of the world suffers from high hummidity, which brings mold. If the rooms were better vented my guess is the odor would not be an issue. Though the pesky flies would! As they get these matters resolved, this town may be the next jet-set stop in Uruguay.

After finding that almost everything in Jose Ignacio was closed in late April we decided to look for other options. We drove to Garzon and tried to check in to Hotel Garzon which siits in thhe center of the lovely village of Garzon about 40 minutes from Jose Ignacio. The location in the quiet town was nice. The facility looked wonderful but appeared closed. A word to the wise for persons looking to travel in Uruguay in teh months of April and May and maybe other low months is to book ahead to ensure the places are open. Might also be smart to get detailed directions as some of the smaller places are difficult to find.
