The Intercontinental Paris Lê Grand hotel is extremely comfortable with old world charm. You don't usually test a hotel to stretching point but following an unexpected medical emergency with my elderly mother, staff pulled out all the stops for 36 hours.

On the third night of our stay she had a fall in the bathroom. Three staff appeared to get her off the bathroom floor and clean up and check she was ok. After a second fall (weakness after the first fall) a few hours later they called the ambulance offered to collect prescribed medication from the pharmacy, produced a hotel wheelchair, called eurostar to figure out how to get her home, found a place to rent a wheelchair i could take out of the building to get to eurostar, cancelled that on learning we needed our own wheelchair to ride eurostar, found a place to buy one and ordered it and had it delivered within 3 hours, organised a private nurse to appear for 24 hours (at some cost but brilliant nursing) till we could get to eurostar, paid the nursing company in cash and put the charge on the room bill as the company wouldn't take a credit card on a weekend night and the cash amount was above my daily withdrawal limit, produced custom prescribed food (the most delicious imaginable sautéed vegetables, rice and bananas - really really good for something that sounds so bland - i gobbled up the left overs!), organised taxis to carry people sitting in wheel chairs and asked at every possible moment how my mother was doing. They also have loads of cleverly hidden doors for wheel chair access lifts and ramps

When i was stuck changing the eurostar ticket for a wheelchair one Guy took me up to the business centre to help navigate the french as i knew most of it but didn't want to make a mistake

I can't thank the staff especially Guy, Alizé, Sebastian, Krystana, Maya, Claudine, Maria and Gabrielle too much for all their support (and the chamber maids - im sorry i don't know your names) and I reckon Guy must have spent much of an entire day making endless calls with an ever cheerful disposition full of helpful suggestions to organise things for us. Without their help the nightmare would have been unimaginably worse. And now we are on board eurostar with mum in the procured wheel chair heading back to our own medical system that at least we know how to navigate ready to take that on after a good night sleep thanks to the nursing care organised for our final night in paris (nr night after the accident). We even managed to go for a walk to the tuilleries with the nurse pushing the wheelchair and have a cappuccino in the sun in its park making the most of the final day in paris -not an entirely bad outcome . We got a taxi equipped to carry a wheelchair to meet us at St. Pancras and take us to the hospital A&E in Sussex where she's been for the last 3 weeks. She's finally out of hospital and starting to make a good recovery.

For anyone that gets this far check your travel insurance includes repatriation and if it doesn't change it for one that does. and if you are elderly bite the bullet and pay the excess charge to make sure you are properly covered. Mum just had the blue euro card which doesn't cover repatriation and left us in a real mess if it hadn't been for the hotel's help. I will not let her travel on just that again !

To the manager of the hotel : your staff were absolutely superb

On a normal review note the rooms and beds are every comfortable , the lounge is magnificent, breakfast is a delicious feast and cafe paix has a very good set menu - utterly delicious. If you are tempted by desert you won't regret the mille feiulle

Restaurant recommendations for the first two nights were good as well and the hotel had already phoned round all their favourite restaurants to check what was open in august so as not to recommend anything closed to any guests.

If you go to paris in the near future the current exhibition of cezanne portraits (musee d'orsay - catch my imminent write up on our blog discerningfoodandtravel.com) was fantastic. I think the exhibitor may be heading to london soon to the national portrait gallery so you could also catch it there . Top tips - pre book the 2nd floor restaurant at the d'orsay or the top floor restaurant of the national gallery in london if if goes there for wonderful views and great food for after you've viewed the exhibition.

Dear guest,

We are really grateful that you took some time to leave us a review about your recent stay. Detailed feedbacks such as yours allow us to review the global quality of service we offer to our guests, and improve ourselves in case there is any point of improvement.

We really strive to make you feel at home. Despite this inconvenience, we hope that your experience has not been too much tarnished by such stress. This has been a blessing for us to read that your mother is now safe and feeling a bit better. We are also delighted to read that you felt well taken care and welcomed. Our staff members really aspired to be dedicated to our guests and make you spend a more beautiful time.

We therefore thank you for highlighting the professionalism and friendliness of our staff members, especially Guy, Alizé, Sebastian, Krystana, Maya, Claudine, Maria and Gabrielle, as well as the chamber maids. We will be really glad to share your kind impressions with you, and congratulate them on your behalf.

Regarding the Café de la Paix, we have been very glad to read your nice comments about the meal offer and share them with our Chef Laurent André and his team.

Finally, we are really happy that you took some time to discover the Parisian art de vivre. Paris offers beautiful landmarks and the hotel is quite close to them. We liked the Cezanne exhibition as well, who was one of the greatest painters of the French heritage.

We would be delighted to welcome you back in the city of lights, on a less trying experience.

Kindest regards,

Christophe Laure

My family was lucky enough to spend 4 wonderful days at this beautiful old Grand Hotel .
Our room was beautiful, we had a Opera view room ( what a view ) .
We were made to feel very welcome, Ernesto in the club lounge looked after us , he was very helpful with information and recommendations.
Ernesto spoke very good English as did most of the staff .
The room was well set out , bed very comfortable.
Pillows were a little soft but overall slept very well .
There is lots of power sockets to charge your phone .
Hotel is very close to all attractions, metro distance or Uber .
Walking distance to the Paris hop on hop off bus .

We came here for the second stage of our honeymoon at the beginning of September.

Honestly, check in was one of the worst I've ever experienced. I'd picked the Intercontinental as I'm part of the loyalty programme, and have stayed at many Intercontinental hotels in Asia and have always found them exceptional. We arrived at about 4pm and was told that our room was not yet ready. This was fine - my meticulous itinerary gave us some time and we were given complimentary drinks and asked to wait in the bar, which was all quite lovely. After 45 minutes, however, still no room. More complimentary drinks. After a further 45 minutes, I was beginning to get quite upset. Considering the time we arrived, well after check in opens, being asked to wait over an hour and half for a room to be cleaned was ridiculous and beginning to eat into our packed evening. Considering I had mentioned it was our honeymoon when booking, and I've never experienced such incompetence before, I was getting more unhappy with this service. We finally got our room close to 6pm, and then the bags hadn't arrived. I went down to complain that my evening and first proper night in Paris was ruined. Whilst I was away, the bags arrived and when I returned to the room, my husband answered the phone to Abdul.

Abdul was incredibly apologetic. He arranged complimentary champagne for our room when we returned from dinner, with plums/nuts on the side, plus some cards congratulating us and a complimentary breakfast for the following day. Whilst I'd rather the room had just been ready when we arrived, I really feel that Abdul did a great job on making it up to us and I feel my concerns were listened to.

After the check in incident, I have nothing to complain about!

The room is decorated nicely, and well maintained. There was an outrageously expensive mini bar, but we didn't use it, there's a nearby supermarket to get drinks/nibbles. The bathroom was quite modern with a good selection of complimentary items. The air con worked and there was a good choice of English TV.

The hotel itself is really close to several metro stations, all about 5 minutes walk away. I found it quite simple to get to all the major sights - Eiffel Tower, Arc De Triomphe, Montmatre, Louvre and the Catacombs. Over a couple of days, it cost us around 30 Euros in total to get around and essentially see all of Paris! There's also security on the door, which we were quite grateful for. It was also easy to get the airport; there's a taxi rank outside and the bell boys just grab one for you. It cost around 50 Euros and took about 30 minutes in the early morning.

Overall, a lovely hotel, slightly marred by the initial check in.

Dear Madam,

We are grateful that you took some time to review our hotel.

We would like once again to offer you our apologies for the check-in experience, and the delay in getting your room, especially on this unique occasion. We must admit that it is not the usual level of service we would like for our guests. The compensations offered is the least we could do to ensure you the best for the rest of your stay.

It warms our hearth that you felt listened by Abdel. Abdel always strives to be professional and helpful and is a real devoted hotelier.

We are really delighted to read your nice comments about the room, the neighbourhood. We do hope that you do not regret your honeymoon in Paris. The location of the hotel is convenient and it is nice to read that you had a good glimpse of Paris. This is lovely to read that the rest of your stay was satisfying to you.

We do look forward to welcoming you back in Paris on a further other special occasion. We are also really happy to count you as our loyal guests.

Kindest regards,

Christophe Laure
