I would never have visited this place, had it not been a rainy bank holiday. Why would a hotel manager recommend we visit Epernay on a bank holiday? I have no idea.

This bar / restaurant uses good ingredients, and cooks them to a very good standard, but the bar is soulless.

We were recommended three restaurants by our hotel, as it was holiday season and most in Epernay were closed. Neither of us wanted to go here judging by the menu and website presentation, but the other two were fully booked. Unfortunately our gut feelings were confirmed and it was likely one of the worst restaurants I have ever eaten in, in France.

The setting and ambiance was.. plain. Perhaps it was 'familiale francais', but having visited about 150 restaurants in France, it felt as if they were trying to create a french dining atmosphere simply by upping the price astronomincally (without corresponding quality) while serving families with crying babies and tourists.

Apart from the crying babies, which of course is not the restaurants' fault, the food was very, very mediocre. For entrée I had a spicy shrimp thing, lathered in dim sum pastry, which was off-balance. I believe it was 18 euro or so. Then came some quail's leg with rice, which was exactly that. Rice. And a quail's leg. No decoration, presentation, sauce to mention. Just, plain. I think another 29 euro. My partner had seabass with mushy peas. Also plain. We skipped the dessert as all the plain-ness and awful photos of a menu long-gone flipping by on a cheap tv screen were just getting the best of us. Waiters uninterested and impersonal. We actually had the best fun with the crying babies and parents trying to cope with that.

Amazingly - fully booked. Must have been because all the other resto's were complet and people felt there was nowhere else to go. 140 euros lighter. Avoid at all cost.

We did like this restaurant. They have a good variety of food and price level is ok, even if it is not the cheapest restaurant. The list of Champagnes available by bottle is just amazing. Staff was very friendly and did also speak good english. It was not our last visit and we will defenitely come Alain.

Excellent food, both traditional French food cooked excellently as well as signature dishes. Wine selection is perfect... can choose from more than 30 champagnes for a reasonable price. Also do try the Armagnac ;-).

We stayed in a nearby town and the hotel made a dinner booking. My name was misspelt. After a grumpy interchange the lady on reception grudgingly let us in!

Food was unimaginative and mostly not well executed
Starters: tomato mozzarella salad poorly dressed and poor quality mozzarella more suited to use on a pizza
The tuna sauce on the veal tasted a bit artificial as if it came out of a squeeze bottle
Main course chicken was tasty but tough
Seared salmon was good and nicely cooked. Unimaginative accompaniments and the bill at just under €100 excluding alcohol for 2-2 course meals was not good value for money
