Hotel Tumulus is a beautiful old building with a rich history but its conveniences are all modern and its staff are lovely. Rooms are large and charming but also crisp and clean and pristinely decorated to ensure both comfort and style. Our family of three felt extremely welcome and slept extremely well throughout our stay.

We were scheduled at the less expensive sister hotel nearby. But they wanted to close for the season. They upgraded us here for the same price. Really nice. A Jacuzzi, lovely breakfast, view room, spa. Thanks! Also right on the trail 15 minutes to the stones. (Turn right at the trail end for the best stones and less traffic.) We lucked out and you can access the stones inside the fence October to April. Very impressive.

For a room that is sold at 220 Euro's per night, excluding breakfast, you expect that little bit more (to be clear, I did not pay this price but rather in the order of 165 Euro's, breakfast included). Some elements to consider :

- We had a room on the second floor, in the roof. The elevator goes to the first floor, as from there is only the stairs. No problem for me, but with the luggage, it is not the most comfortable situation.
- The room is not particularly large (with the exception of the bathroom), especially given the slope of the roof that does not allow to stand up on two sides of the room. The decoration of the room is very basic and curtains do not close properly.
- The pool and jacuzzi can use some upgrading/refurbishment. That that they cannot be used, but broken fences, broken entry gates, broken furniture... it does not give such a charming impression
- The hotel is part of the "relais de silence" group, but that does not imply for interior sound : accoustic isolation can be much better. Bring your earplugs !
- Breakfast should be better at this level. Not that it is bad, but the choice could be more extensive for 16 Euro. Coffee can also much better (but that is often a problem in French hotels)
- No bathroom amenities (really nothing). Only big bottles of shampoo and shower gel, like you expect them to be at Ibis hotel, but not in this price class. Coffee not replenished correctly, which is then perfectly corrected when asked for at the reception.

But the staff is very nice, friendly and helpful. And the restaurant is very good, but that is a topic for a separate review.

We stayed here for 3 nights as part of a vintage car rally and were delighted with the service that we received. We were on a half board basis and they were very flexible to fit in with peoples dietary requirements. The location is excellent for visiting the Morbihan area. the town is a shot walk down the hill and the beach a further half mile. The petit train is worth doing to get a good feel of Carnac. The breakfasts were delicious. There is a good range of rooms. The pool was most refreshing and the Jacuzzi great after a long day in the old cars.

Set on a hill only a short walk from Carnac town, the hotel and grounds are very quiet and the views are far reaching. The “garden room” we booked is located to the side of the main hotel and is beautifully furnished and spotlessly clean. The downside was the fact there was no air conditioning and no tea/coffee making facilities which, I believe, should be offered taking into account the fact the outside garden rooms are a few minutes’ walk from the hotel. Our biggest disappointment was the fact that for the three nights we stayed here there was nowhere we could locate a wi-fi signal for more than a few seconds before it ceased to work. Staff were friendly but extremely limited in understanding English. Yes, we did speak French as best we could, but everything still got muddled. As we were travelling with quite a large group of vintage car enthusiasts, we were able to obtain a group discount, which reflected in the set menu we were given for two of the three nights we had dinner at the hotel. It was made quite clear by the waiting staff that we were unable to deviate from this selection of two or three main meals and sadly the majority of us were not impressed with the food. The tiny portion of vegetables consisted mainly of artistically pureed coloured blobs crowned with one small carrot. The artichokes were inedible. For the high price paid for our stay and the highly priced meals, I would have expected a sumptious banquet, but came away hungry. Coffee was extra.

Room Tip: Garden rooms are very quiet
