Dined here purely by chance. What a stroke of luck. The restaurant serves traditional local food. It is run by a lady with a huge personality, who speaks very little English, but whose enthusiasm to serve you with great traditional food is simply wonderful. When we arrived, the place had a few customers, but was still very quiet. She showed us to a table and offerred us an aperitif. We then waited a while, whilst she served the other customers and began to be come a little concerned as to whether or not we had chosen the wrong restaurant. The problem was she was doing everything - meeting customers, providing drinks, cooking and serving food. She was becoming a little flustered, but everything was done with a huge smile. We were expecting a menu, but one was not forthcoming. She suggested we tried the local rustic menu, which we did. She showed us a framed review in English of the food, which was very encouraging, but we did have some reservations. When the soup came arrived, it was presented in a huge bowl, which could have served several people, but it was just for us. It was so tasty and quite filling. The next course was minced veal over vegetables. Again piping hot and beautifully cooked, followed finally a local gateaux.

This place should not be missed in any visit to Bayonne. The atmosphere and the food was great, but the star attraction is the lady who runs the restaurant.

We booked a table here and the owner set it all up inside for the evening. Very, very little English is spoken and there is no menu - apart from very rapid french you are shown a framed piece of writing that mentions a dish for each course. She was very good though and bought us out a local minced dish to taste.

I went with that and we explained in stilted French that my husband would like a pork dish. The lady in charge seemed to cook, serve and do everything. She was a real character and every time we ordered something or she came to the table she turned to the whole restaurant and made some joke. They were all laughing good humourdly but we had no idea what the joke was or what was going on - apart from when we ordered a starter between us and it seemed as if she was saying my husband was mean. No malice just a jokey conversation and she had such energy rushing from one place to another.

We really did have a good entertaining evening here and the food was good value. We were given a complimentary drink at the end. I would recommend a visit by everyone if you are staying in Bayonne. Fantastic - entertainment as well as good food.

We went on the recommendation of a friend, Oscar3 who reviewed earlier on TA and pretty much nailed it.

Firstly its very popular, book if you can or get there early. Second its very good value for money, €13 for a menu. You'll find the place full of locals, not tourists! Third the food and setting are quite 'rustic', so don't expect a candle-lit dinner.
Overall genuine tasty Basque food, served at very good value for money. You will enjoy.

Why is this not number one on trip advisor?!?!?!?
Annie is lovely lady who helps you make the right decision and recommend the right plates for you. There was no written menu for us but were told the the short, simple, delicious, home cooked menu. Entrees, mains and deserts are all copious!!! If you are not a big eater only 1 plate will suffice!
I cannot emphasize how amazing this place is!!
We ate 2 entrees, 2 mains (well struggled to finish these because there was so much food!) 1 dessert, a bottle of wine - all this under €40!!! Hard to find this quality and quantity for such a low price.
If I go back to Bayonne, this will be my number 1 spot to eat again!!! Our evening was Quiet as it was raining, off season and the French were having to qualify for the World Cup on tv... But service not in your face. Run by Annie, who every now and then has a lady that helps. It really is like at home - she does it all on her own! Typical local food, amazing quality and quantity for price, we worth the wait if there is one!!!
Would be happy to rave about this restaurant for years to come!!

This is a small restaurant and on the night we were there an amazing lady did front of house, all the cooking and waiting until a waitress arrived at about 8:30pm. Our fault we got there at about 7:45 which is very early for this part of France. The menu was scibbled in chalk outside but our phrase book didn't help much. The cook could speak very little English so she bought out a review done by a travel writer about 10 years ago so we ordered that.
She bought us a little taster first and we drank sangria. We had 3 courses - omelet first, the traditional Axao which was minced veal with potatoes peppers etc and a basque tart for desert. The wine was brought out in liitle jugs and our hostess finished off the meal by offering a liquer which she kept bringing out.
The meal was brilliant, so full of flavour, the hostess was just lovely and so helpful and it cost 13 euros for the food. The place was full on a Tues night and no wonder. This was a great basque experience. Simple, not fancy, not to be missed.
