Stayed one night in Bayonne and this was our dinner out. We were staying across the river from here so ventured out past a few restaurants along the riverfront until we came to this cafe which seemed to be a good one. We were seated on the patio next to the river which was nice, except cars kept driving past on the one lane, one way street just a few feet from our table.Otherwise a nice view and pleasant ambiance. Our server was nice and attentive until we had all our food then we never saw her again. We ordered a bottle of rioja wine. Our plates were Tapas Bebis, Maigre, Carpaccio Tomate and one Salade Mixte. This is not a cheap place for what is received. The Maigre translates to mean skinny, and that is what it was a skinny whitefish. Tasty but I had to spend a lot of time picking out the bones. The wine and the tomato dish were excellent as was the cheese. I think we could find a better meal for the price.
How fortunate we were to come across this restaurant. Les Tonton is on the riverside with an indoor restaurant and outside seating. We arrived at 7.15 and by 8pm every seat was taken in the place. We were warmly welcomed and the two personnel who served the restaurant were expert at their jobs. The food was exceptional with the portions not inconsiderable The menu was comprehensive modern fusion cooking. We shared a large plate of oven cooked brie with cristal toast and a fruit confit with garnish, then we had entrecote steak with French fries and a tasty dish of merluz (hake) on a bed of revuelto eggs (veg and eggs). Two glasses of wine and a pernod and the bill was €50 including a tip.
It looks nice and the location is good. However, the food was quite poor. We expected it to an average lunch restaurant based on location, menu and price. The to food was just not that good. The Tatar was not seasoned and the salad a little sad. Just to be clear. The place is not awful and I'm usually very restrictive with giving away high score
After a nice walk around the city, the river sidewalk and the different touristic areas we were starving and we found this place surrounded by many others restaurants but this one specially called our attention by its original menu and its colourism. We had a try and we succeed. Fresh food, pleasant deal and hearty food. We tried the hake and the beef tartar and both of them delicious. I recomend this place not only for the reasons above but for the views of the river too. Enjoy it!
