Owner description: The magnificent curved facade of the warm butter-coloured stone building draws in the visitor. The eye-catching giant sculpture on the gable was inspired by a tiny 13th century belt mount found in Waterford. It is Ireland’s only purpose-built medieval museum and the only building on the island to incorporate two medieval chambers, the 13th century Choristers’ Hall and the 15th century Mayor’s Wine Vault. Don't miss the stunning Heavens' Embroidered Cloths, Waterford's cloth-of-gold 15th century vestments, the only piece of clothing from King Henry VIII's reign to survive in the world - the 'Cap of Maintenance' and the Great Charter Roll from 1373, containing the earliest contemporary portrait of a medieval English king (Edward III) shown to Queen Elizabeth on her 2011 state visit to Ireland. These and many more unique artefacts await you on your guided tour of the award wining Medieval Museum.

We visited the Waterford Medieval Museum in July 2015 with our two boys, aged 13 and 9.

There was lots to see and do as the museum unravelled the history of Waterford. There was a good mix of interactive learning and viewing historic artefacts from the city's past.

Would recommend seeing the Vestments room which showcases beautifully embroidered coats with a wee bit of WB Yeates Cloths of Heaven being read over the speakers.

Would take a good two hours to explore the whole museum. We did so on a rare rainy day during our trip.

Would recommend this museum if you are in Waterford.

Good afternoon Stephen

Many thanks for your fantastic review of your recent visit to the award winning Medieval Museum. Its great to get such wonderful reviews, especially from families as we try to make the museum as interesting as possible for all ages, so that it can be a family visit or just come on your own.

The best way to see it all is to take the guided tour, at no extra cost and then wander back around and view in detail all of the artefacts and immerse yourself in all that is enclosed within the Medieval Museum.

Go raibh míle maith agat!

Notwithstanding that we have been in Waterford on a few occasions since the Medieval Museum opened in 2013, we just thought it would not be worth the time.

Then, earlier this week, we were invited on a tour of the museum and thought we would see what's on offer.

Well, we were very impressed.

This is much more than a museum; more a series of living history experiences that is brought to life by a team of passionate staff. As soon as you enter, the experiences unfold in front of you with archery demonstrations. You can even get an archery lesson for an additional €5.

Being on a guided tour will make a huge difference to your experience. Our guide was excellent and contextualised the history of Waterford against the backdrop of Irish, British and European history.

All the exhibits are presented in an informative fashion. The piece-de-resistance must be the gold-braided vestments and the story about how they were uncovered. We won't spoil it by revealing more on here.

In conclusion, we thoroughly enjoyed our experiences at The Medieval Museum. It is great value too at €7.

This was the best trip I had while in Ireland , found it both informative and entertaining. THe guided tour, like the Bishops Palace nearby was about an hour long and easy to follow. A lot of the talk really put you in the mood of the era. We returned to look at some of the items in more depth. Staff were very helpful and always willing to answer questions.

This is an excellent example of a modern museum. The highlight in my opinion is the mayor's wine vault at the lowest level, but the all the exhibits are well displayed and explained, and the short video presentations are helpful.

Hi magpie

Thank you very much for taking the time to review your recent visit to the award winning Medieval Museum. I'm delighted that you enjoyed the 'Undercrofts', the 13th century Choristers' Hall and the 15th century Mayors Wine Vault, they are such a surprise to visitors when they come into such a modern building like the Medieval Museum and find these secret treasures underneath them.

The auditoriums on each of the floors are always worthwhile viewing as they give you an insight into what lies before you, prior to entering the individual galleries.

We do hope you come back and visit us again.

Take a guided tour thought his Museum which traces the rich heritage of Waterford City. Great stories, amazing exhibits including a richly illustrated medieval scroll. Some cool clerical vestments too.
