Owner description: The magnificent curved facade of the warm butter-coloured stone building draws in the visitor. The eye-catching giant sculpture on the gable was inspired by a tiny 13th century belt mount found in Waterford. It is Ireland’s only purpose-built medieval museum and the only building on the island to incorporate two medieval chambers, the 13th century Choristers’ Hall and the 15th century Mayor’s Wine Vault. Don't miss the stunning Heavens' Embroidered Cloths, Waterford's cloth-of-gold 15th century vestments, the only piece of clothing from King Henry VIII's reign to survive in the world - the 'Cap of Maintenance' and the Great Charter Roll from 1373, containing the earliest contemporary portrait of a medieval English king (Edward III) shown to Queen Elizabeth on her 2011 state visit to Ireland. These and many more unique artefacts await you on your guided tour of the award wining Medieval Museum.

Visited this museum in July 2015 and the best part was meeting Peter, the archer! He's stationed right at the front door, ready to give you an amazing talk about medieval archery and teach you how to shoot the longbow. He's an absolute wealth of information and very engaging to speak with. I enjoyed meeting him so much I've taken to following him on his Facebook page "Archery Through the Ages", where he regularly supplies interesting historical points and plenty of posts of his daily visitors at the museum. It's obvious he enjoys what he does!

The museum was fantastic. It takes approximately 45m to go through with the provided audio guide. The Cloth of Gold Vestments from the 1400s are the highlight of the exhibitions.

Good afternoon Kelly,

It is wonderful to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the Medieval Museum and that you had fun with peter, the archer. Archery lessons and discourse as well as the opportunity to mint your own coin are two new experiences we have here at the museum to make history come alive and to ensure that each visitor has a unique and worthwhile experience.

We hope to see you again soon!

Spent several hours here on our trip to Waterford--came when it opened and had a nearly private tour, then came back later in the day to really stop and read/admire all the exhibits. Seeing these items saved from destruction and the actual charters were some of our personal highlights.

We went into this small attraction, not really expecting anything grand. Boy, were we in for a treat!! The medieval history of the town is extremely well presented, and we were awed by the presence and beauty of the medieval vestements on display. Well done, Waterford. This museum will not disappoint!

Good morning Angela,

We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your visit to Ireland's oldest city and to the Medieval Museum. The cloth of gold vestments on display date to about 1460 and are the only surviving set of medieval high mass vestments in Northern Europe. The history of Waterford city is colourful and varied and it is wonderful to hear of your interest in it.

We hope to see you again soon!

Go raibh míle maith agat.

Good afternoon Siobhán

We are delighted to hear that you and your family enjoyed your visit to the Medieval Museum. We try to appeal to all age groups and so it is wonderful to hear about your experience. There are three audio visuals in the museum which bring Waterford's history to life.

This combined with our two new experiences where you can practice archery and mint your own coin keep children engaged and interested while teaching them about our history.

I hope you get to visit us again soon!
