Owner description: The magnificent curved facade of the warm butter-coloured stone building draws in the visitor. The eye-catching giant sculpture on the gable was inspired by a tiny 13th century belt mount found in Waterford. It is Ireland’s only purpose-built medieval museum and the only building on the island to incorporate two medieval chambers, the 13th century Choristers’ Hall and the 15th century Mayor’s Wine Vault. Don't miss the stunning Heavens' Embroidered Cloths, Waterford's cloth-of-gold 15th century vestments, the only piece of clothing from King Henry VIII's reign to survive in the world - the 'Cap of Maintenance' and the Great Charter Roll from 1373, containing the earliest contemporary portrait of a medieval English king (Edward III) shown to Queen Elizabeth on her 2011 state visit to Ireland. These and many more unique artefacts await you on your guided tour of the award wining Medieval Museum.

Interestingly laid out history of the area. Not just the usual dusty chronological arrangement. Best part for us was the medieval archery tutorial and lesson given just inside the door by a local savant, Peter O'Connor .

Good morning Glenn

Its great that you enjoyed your recent visit to the award winning Medieval Museum, everything that we do and the way we lay out the museum is to make sure all our visitors enjoy a great experience.

There is a lot to see within the award winning Medieval Museum, its the only museum in Europe built over two National Monuments, the 13th Century Choristers Hall and the 15th Century Mayor's Wine vault, there are two floors of fantastic artefacts which include the Great Parchment Book of Waterford from 1350, the Great Charter Roll which was commissioned in 1373, the stunning collection of High Mass Vestments, the 'Cloth of Gold Vestments from 1468, the only piece of clothing from King Henry VIII to survive, the 'Cap of Maintenance' from 1536, and a relic of the true Cross in a case from circa 110AD, a gift from Pope Paschal as well as the many other artefacts and presentations in the different auditoriums.

We have also added the Coin Minting in the Choristers' Hall as Waterford was a Royal Mint, where you can mint your own coin from 1185 and also, as mentioned, we have introduced medieval archery, where you can loose off three arrows with some training from our qualified archer Peter, all at a small additional cost.

I dont usually go to museums but since this museum had good reviews on Trip Advisor - I decided to give it a go and was not disappointed.

Had a guided tour from Teresa. Really enjoyed it. It was very informative without information overload. Tour was adequate length to maintain interest.

Unable to take the spiral staircase due to buggy but lift was available - this didn't in any way impact upon our enjoyment - still highly recommend going. Staff were very helpful assisting with the lifts and Teresa waited for us to arrive before proceeding with the tour.

Decided this was a must-see based on other Tripadvisor reviews and we were not disappointed! Begin by taking the tour, which lasts about 45 mins, as these pick out some of the museum highlights and allow you to decide what you want to go back and see in more detail. Our guide, Derek, was excellent - informative and amusing. The tours seem to be every half hour so if you have to wait for the start of the next one you can wander around the museum in the interim.

The interpretive panels are well written and cover a host of topics related to medieval Ireland. We were particularly interested in the second floor, devoted to the influence of British monarchs - make sure you see Henry VIII's hat! Do take time to see the short videos too.

However, the crowning glory was the collection of medieval vestments - a stunning collection simply displayed allowing you a 360 deg view of the fabulous colour and detail.

Allow yourself 1-2 hours to do the museum justice.

Thank Trudi B
