Owner description: The magnificent curved facade of the warm butter-coloured stone building draws in the visitor. The eye-catching giant sculpture on the gable was inspired by a tiny 13th century belt mount found in Waterford. It is Ireland’s only purpose-built medieval museum and the only building on the island to incorporate two medieval chambers, the 13th century Choristers’ Hall and the 15th century Mayor’s Wine Vault. Don't miss the stunning Heavens' Embroidered Cloths, Waterford's cloth-of-gold 15th century vestments, the only piece of clothing from King Henry VIII's reign to survive in the world - the 'Cap of Maintenance' and the Great Charter Roll from 1373, containing the earliest contemporary portrait of a medieval English king (Edward III) shown to Queen Elizabeth on her 2011 state visit to Ireland. These and many more unique artefacts await you on your guided tour of the award wining Medieval Museum.

Waterford's Museum of Medieval Treasures has a great policy of bring things to life and getting enthusiastic people in to show some real crafts and skills as practised in 9th - 16th century Waterford (Ireland's oldest city). A famous glass-cutter is working in the foyer and below are figures from history demonstrating coin-minting and archery (have a go!!) as well as displaying wood and leather work and tools.

Waterford's Medieval Museum tells the story of Waterford, from it's founding by Vikings in the Dark Ages, through it's late medieval period and the beginning of the 'Troubles' in Ireland. Nice dioramas show the sequential growth of Waterford from a small trading post to the walled city. Ancient artifacts are displayed throughout. And the Church Vestments, found hidden from Cromwellian armies, are beautiful. For a brief look at Waterford's (and Ireland's) past, the Medieval Museum is worth the effort. And it's convenient location downtown makes it quite accessible.

The Waterford Medieval Museum is a treasure and a great addition to Irish and non-Irish alike in understanding the long and colourful history of this town. The story of the gold vestments is remarkable and they are beautiful in their own right.

Good afternoon Alainn, thank you very much for you very kind remarks about the award winning Medieval Museum.

The selection of artefacts are truly stunning and, as you mentioned, the cloth of Gold Vestments are wonderful and the story of their survival is worthy of a novel!

We do hope you get another opportunity to visit us and enjoy the Bishop's Palace, the Georgian history of Waterford city, which is next door to the Medieval Museum.
