Granville Hotel is lovely--there's a stateliness about it. The decor, right down to the wallpaper, feels like a step back in time, perhaps like a visit to grandma's where you're hesitant to actually sit on the furniture or touch your grubby hands to the wall. There's a quirkiness about the hallways--also much like grandma's house--due to the years of acquisitions and expansions of the original building. Be sure to read the available literature to learn about the origination of the hotel and some of the people who have stayed there; it's really interesting.
The rooms are nice--everything you would expect in a hotel. It even had USB ports, which was important to us because I had left the phone charger in the previous hotel. My husband (a former Brit. Lit. professor) loved the W.B. Yeats drinking water!
While we very much enjoyed the elevated atmosphere of the bar/restaurant, it is a bit stodgy with an older clientele and certainly is not the type of place where you're going to find a party. (As a matter of fact, we were hard pressed to find any "happening" establishments in the old downtown area of Waterford. Doesn't make it any less lovely, just a little more staid and boring.)
Our stay was mid- to late-November and the hotel was decked out in Christmas finery, giving us a cheerful entry to the holiday season.
There are local tourist sites to visit within walking distance, e.g., Reginald's Tower, the Waterford Crystal factory, and there's a wonderful boutique shopping experience within steps of the hotel. One could easily spend a day trekking the streets around the corner to find unique purchases. Regretfully, we were there only one (1) night and were to miss out on the annual Christmas tree lighting, complete with a closed off street that was beautifully decorated and also featured a carousel and various amusements (skating rink, Ferris wheel).
FYI Parking Experience: Parking is across the street at the clock tower lot. It's not far but can seem that way when you're lugging your bags in the cold. Grab your ticket and be sure to have the hotel validate it for you. When you're prepared to leave, insert the validated ticket into the machine (by the clock tower--not at the exit) and wait for it to give you the price you owe, which will be zero. Then keep the ticket handy as you drive out of the lot as you will need to insert it again to make the gate open.
