As the greenway was close to our hotel - Knockranney House Westport - we walked quite a distance. Lovely scenary, very relaxing and met some very nice, interesting
locals. Highly recommended. If you are feeling fit suggest walking as far as
Newport, grabbing a coffee there and taking a taxi back. Enjoy.

Excellent for walking and cycling. Surface ok for road bikes. Intended to cycle to Westport but weather was grim

Gone are the frantic sun holidays, filled with food, booze and hangovers. This is the new reality, stunning scenery, getting back to the real world, walking, biking, it's great, you're off road, so no traffic worries. Walk for free or hire a bike for only €15 a day. We loved our week away from the madness of busy working lives. ....And guess what still time for food and a few drinks at the end of the day. This greenway is fantastic. Give it a try..

Starting out from Westport this initial part is still under development and is currently not as appealing in parts, but some parts are really lovely as the old track wends along the side of the road and under ancient rail arches etc before crossing the road and plunging into a wide flat valley before re-emerging onto the road into newport. From Newport (beautiful town) onwards to mulranny the road climbs gently up into the foothills of the mountains and along the old rail line, the views of the mountains themselves, and then across clew bay as the line falls towards the village of Mulranny are wonderful, Mulranny is a great spot to stop for a quick drink and bite to eat and from then onwards to Achill the views are even more spectacular, before finishing up just the mainland side of Achill sound. Definitely one of the best greenways in ireland.
