“Feb 2017 second spin on the greenway”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 weeks ago

Starting out from Westport this initial part is still under development and is currently not as appealing in parts, but some parts are really lovely as the old track wends along the side of the road and under ancient rail arches etc before crossing the road and plunging into a wide flat valley before re-emerging onto the road into newport. From Newport (beautiful town) onwards to mulranny the road climbs gently up into the foothills of the mountains and along the old rail line, the views of the mountains themselves, and then across clew bay as the line falls towards the village of Mulranny are wonderful, Mulranny is a great spot to stop for a quick drink and bite to eat and from then onwards to Achill the views are even more spectacular, before finishing up just the mainland side of Achill sound. Definitely one of the best greenways in ireland.

“So worth the effort - Beautiful day out in the air”

The Wes greenway is the greatest attraction that is on offer in Mayo. You can hire bikes of any possible type including ones with small trailers that take two small kids. The route can start or finish anywhere you like if you have taken the bike hire option as he will start you or pick up up at several points between Westport and Achill sound. Its best to plan a leisurely long day rather than a race. Its build for comfort, scenery rather than exercise. The first leg is Westport to Newport is a nice start but is the least isolated . From Newport onwards you get into the real wild countryside and its a joy just to go along at your ease. There are many stop off points so no worries about getting too hungry or tired. As its built on the old railway line there are no hills just long gradients up nd down. Don't come to the west and not do it. Especially if there are kids with too much energy.

“New long tough ”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 February 2017 via mobile

Definitely great trail for bikers. Not convinced having walked its entire length its great for hiking.

Need to think about places to stop and eat drink etc as these are v few on the trail outside of the towns. So Westport or Achill load up - mulranney and newport provide limited opportunities at present - otherwise enjoy the views even in the rain.

“Wonderful scenery from Newport to Achill.”

The early part of the cycle from Westport to Newport had a lot of roads to cross over - just to be aware of this in case you are cycling with young children.
