We've visited the Mellifont Abbey on a cold and rainy October Bank Holiday weekend and still really enjoyed the views and the tranquility of this place. Obviously only ruins remained but the size of the complex foundations and of the whole site proves it must have been an amazing and big-enough monastery. Very quiet and not over-crowded with tourists. You can easily spend half an hour to an hour walking around all the ruins and shooting photos. There's also a bit of parking space and a visitor centre just at the entrance, but it actually looked closed when we were there (didn't check though). There's no admission fees to the abbey but it's location is not the easiest to find - just follow the road signs for Mellifont and you'll get there eventually.
