“Magical, Mystical, Splendid”

If you have a Hollywood vision of what Ireland should look like, a mix match of The Quiet Man and Darby O'Gill and The Little People and that whole genre, then the Gap Of Dunloe brings all that to life, but not in a crummy way. Firstly, what is the Gap? A huge glacial rift valley created at the end of the last ice age, which left an escarpment hundreds of feet deep through the mountains, exposing layers of bedrock. When it settled, it filled with mountain steams and rivers. These created beautifull picturesque lakes along the valley floor. The floara and fauna are magnificent. The views breath taking. A photographers dream.
Whats there. Pub, shop, restaurant, car park, gift shop and of course the jarveys. These are the horse and trap (cart) men. Characters, scoundrels and rogues in their own right, but thats part of the charms. You and your family can load up into one of these carts and being taken on a fab ride through the valley. The driver will give you the history and commentary you need. He will even take photos of you with your own camera. It costs but you can haggle, a bit. In any case, its worth it.
Don't worry about the weather. The most magical times are when there is a drifting mist rolling down over the mountains, darkening the sky, as it envelopes the road to the Black Valley, officially the last place in Ireland to be connected to the electricity grid!
There are plenty of touristy rip-offs out there, but this is one of the few attractions worth paying for.
Kids love it; big open sky, fresh air, and talk of leprechauns and haunted lakes.
Adults will appreciate the natural beauty and the experience.
You can get a decent Irish coffee or Guinness at the pub. The food there is good too. Not to expensive and they have no problem with kids.

The Gap of Dunloe is simply stunning with its rough nature, one has to walk up and down the gap for once at least to have it experienced.
