This lovely hostel is really in the middle of nowhere and the internet description for the hostel did not convey the impression that it is deep in the valley. We saw only one sign coming from Beaufort and it is not for the good people urging us on in the right direction, we would probably have turned back.

Still, the views of the mountains and valleys were one of the best we saw in Ireland. We would surely have missed it if we opted to stay in town. Maneuvering the unusual traffic jam that clogged up the single track mountain road on the day of our travel was nerve racking but quite a thrill looking back. We had some problems with clean water supply at the hostel, were told that water is safe but we bought water from the hostel shop to be safe. This is something we could have stocked up in town on had we known.

There was also no washer or dryer, inconvenient if you have wet stuff.

Still, this is the boondocks - so we are not complaining - we were quite happy with the set up otherwise. The wifi connection was surprisingly the best we had travelling around Ireland. The kitchen is open all hours which is really helpful for early birds like us.

Room tip: The family rooms are at the back of the hostel - separate, nice if you need the privacy but you need to get out in the open to access the kitchen and sitting room.

We were walking part of the Kerry Way, it was our first trip to Southern Ireland, and we stayed in the Black Valley hostel on our second night. We booked a a double room with a private bathroom it was clean and the beds where made up. There is also a small shop at the hostel. The person who ran the hostal, I am sure her name was Susan, couldnt have been more helpful. She arranged a lift for us back to Kate Kearneys Cottage that evening where we enjoyed good food, music and of course a pint of Guiness. Black Valley is one of the most beautiful valleys I have ever walked through..

Nice hostel then, glad to reach it after walking 24km from killarney. Pretty basic but satisfactory. Be careful when You book, they dont have their own website, so the best thing is to call them, because they do have double rooms, which we didn't know... There is à grocery store in the hostel, very convenient and not that expensive actually. What's more there is free WiFi and they prépare packed lunches on demand (5.50€ i think). Overall à nice stop along the Kerry way.

Two friends and I down from Tyrone to climb, walk, and relax. The owner and his wife very friendly, helpful and laid back. we stayed four nights. The location may be a bit isolated but we had a car and brought supplies with us. If you are looking to get away from the rat-race,shopping and crowds and take in some of the most peaceful and beautiful places in Ireland you won't be disappointed. Great walking, climbing and cycling opportunties. My one small gripe is I had to be the designated driver to and from the pubs but I knew the hostel was in an isolated location. I would recommend this hostel to anyone that wants to go off the beaten track.

We were there in May bank holiday weekend. We couldn't find it at first, because I thought Black Valley is just the name. But it was in Black Valley - one of the most beautiful places in Ireland. Just beside Carrantuohill. Hostel is just refurbished and is in really good condition. Was just a little bit too cold, but only early morning. just remember there is no public transport, so only on your feet, or by car.
