“A Secret Gem.”
Reviewed 3 January 2012

Just back from a two day break in this hotel with my sisters to celebrate a birthday and what a surprise. I recommended the hotel from reviews from this site even though I was not paying for the break so I was a bit apprehensive in case it did not live up to others expectations. I needn't have worried, what a gem when my sister was booking two rooms she asked for reduction but they gave her an upgrade instead and the rooms were really lovely, quiet, clean and large. It had lovely old world charm without the tattiness often associated with 'old world charm'. We sat in the 'Garden Room' in front of the fire before and after dinner with a drink (had it all to ourselves) and soaked up the history of the building which I believe was once a 5 bedroomed house owned by two sisters. Right up until we were checking out I thought this is the most perfect hotel I stayed in at this price but unfortunately a tiny thing irked me when my sister was paying the bill. The dinner we had one night was included in the offer but we had two bottles of wine at the meal and we were charged a service charge on top of cost of these it was only about six euro so was nothing really but just it left a bad taste in my mouth I never was charged this before in any hotel I have ever stayed in either a three or five star hotel as I say a small thing but just one of those things that annoy me. I don’t know if we knew that we were going to be charged this service charge would we have left a generous tip. The service was so good and friendly and food lovely both in the bar and restaurant so a pity really I had that little gripe I'm sure others will think I'm petty but just 'one of those things'. Would I go back - I certainly will.

Dear '001952',

Thank You.

We are very pleased that you and your sisters enjoyed your stay with us recently and we look forward to the possibility of welcoming you back to stay with us again in the future.

All feedback is important to us and is addressed where possible / necessary. We thank you for your feedback in relation to service charge on wine and, following receipt of your comment, this has now been addressed.

It was printed on our wine list that service charge would be applicable and added to each bill. We have now reviewed our wine lists and this is no longer the case. Thank you for having brought this to our attention.

Kindest Regards,
The Ardilaun Team

We stayed in the ardilaun over Xmas with our 3 year old and twin 9 month old babies. We loved our stay

Positives
Kindly upgraded our room to fit two cots (without asking)
Staff (other than in main restaurant) excellent - friendly, engaging and v helpful
Bar had lovely atmosphere and food at informal restaurant excellent
Hotel decorated beautifully at xmas
Great lobby

Negatives
Certain staff in main restaurant were unengaging almost rude (albeit efficient) - which in our view lead to lack of atmosphere in the formal dining room
Food at breakfast v mediocre - better to have fewer choices but better quality food

Dear 'raycatherine',

Thank you so much for taking the time to post your review.

We are most delighted to read your positive comments but quite disappointed to read those which are not so.

Your post details have been communicated throughout the hotel and highlighted specifically to our chefs, dining room management and dining room staff.

Please accept our sincerest apologies. I can assure you that feedback such as yours is certainly not the norm and not the level on which we pride ourselves.

All feedback is welcomed and we sincerely thank you.

Just back for a two night break at this hotel. Its a beautifully renovated Hotel. It still retains the values of service and customer focus so often lacking in many hotels. My wife and the two girls had a lovely stay enjoying the leisure centre and spa. The kids club although extra was great and allowed us to enjoy the comfortable lounge and many ante rooms of the hotel. We had one evening meal which was a little fussy but service and taste were excellent. Although this is an older hotel its had many modern facilities such as free wifi through out the hotel and the leisure centre and gym were modern and up to date. The staff were excellent, friendly and efficient. The hotel was clean and well maintained throughout. The only downside is that its a little outside the city so keep some budget set aside for taxis.

Dear 'spmccann',

Thank you so much - we are so glad to know that you all enjoyed your stay with us.

Over recent years we have redeveloped the hotel to the value of €12m - while we did this, it was of the utmost importance to us that we retained our 'old world' comfort and charm for which we are reknowned.

Thank you again and we look forward to the possibility of welcoming you back to stay with us again at some point in the future.

Happy New Year and Warmest Regards,
The Ardilaun Team

We stayed in December for one night, we were a group of six girls and we attended a Christmas Party night here, the food was excellent one of us is coeliac and nothing was a problem with the staff, the were extremely helpful bring extra helpings and offering alternatives. The bedrooms were lovely with a adjoining door between each which made our getaway all the better. Its a nice quiet hotel with very friendly and accommodating staff, the manager (sorry can't remember her name) on the Sunday morning made time to go around to everyones table to make sure we were all being looked after, it was very busy but there was no delay in getting the yummy breccie, all in all I would highly recommend this hotel to family and friends. And we will definetly be back.

We stayed here in December after a friend recommended it, i must say as soon as we landed the staff were so helpful & friendly, our room was clean and a good size we had bar food (m/steak is a must say) it was fantastic. The bar staff were friendly and helpful letting us know where we should go shopping in town and about parking. When we were checking out i seen a dog in the lobby and inquired only to find out there a dog friendly hotel so i will be back but next time ill be bringing my boxer.
