“unforgettable acceptance!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 September 2011

I sincerely recommend this hospitable B&B! It takes 10 minutes to reach the city centre by foot. Niall, the nice owner, will advise you the best and less touristic places in Dublin and on its coast. For example, one of the last days, during the generous and delicious breakfast, Niall recommended us a visit, by train, of Joyce Tower in Sandycove, in the southern part of Dublin's Bay. I don't know how but he managed to guess our interests in any advice!! The staff was extremely kind and smiling, like most of irish people I met :)

After a long and very tiresome journey from Glasgow , our first impression of the " OVERFLOW " room was utter disappointment. The pillows and bedding were disgusting and not fit for use.The television was on the floor , therefore no use to no-one.The t.v was covered in dust as was the rest of the room. The curtains were filthy with what looked like sick on them.
At breakfast things went from bad to worse.2 of us decided against breakfast and straight away 2 of the sachets of butter were removed from the table. With this I refused to leave a complete sausage on my plate with the risk of them being put back out for the next guest.
One of the children with us also had the misfortune to have two hairs in her breakfast.
The shower and shower curtain in the upstairs bathroom was filthy. The groundfloor toilet is so small you can barely close the door. The lock on the main enterance door does not work which means you have to wait around for someone to let you in.

Fatima House is a 2* B&B which is based in a period house in the heart of Dublin.

Fatima House consists of the following:

4 x standard en suite double room
3 x standard en suite twin room
2 x family room (both en suite)
1 x triple en suite room
4 x standard basic room (single(2)/double and twin)
1 x en suite single room.

Whereas our operation can be described as modest, we are proud to receive customers who continue to support us. Most people enjoy what we have to offer. Our dining room is unique.

We have just received 2 bookings for next year (9 or 10 months in advance) worth in excess of €1,000. What an endorsement!

Had a really good time at Fatima House. Staff was very friendly and helpfull with everything! Breakfast was great and the bed very comfortable. I felt very safe in Fatima House but didn't like the street it was on so much.

Thank you Niall for everything!

Having read many positive reviews of Fatima House we were disappointed with the standard of accommodation. The room and shared bathroom were both below our expectations even for a no frills establishment. Our bedroom was very dusty and had an awful musty smell (we had to go out and buy an air freshener). The TV was dusty, and had a finger mark going through it (I think when people do that, it’s a hint to clean it!) and the sides were also dusty and there was a sticky brown mark on the headboard of the bed. The wine glasses next to the basin were dusty and dirty and the bedding was also stained and worn out.

I also agree with comments made in another review that the shower room was not up to standard. Although a new shower curtain was put up and re-painting did occur during our stay I feel that the real problem was basic hygiene. The shower overflowed during use and hairs/dirt were always in the shower (we checked at various times of our stay there was no noticeable sign that it had been cleaned). The toilet/shower room does not have a sink, which is not ideal. On the last day the toilet would not flush, I reported this to a member of staff immediately. This was not fixed when we left, around 24 hours after we reported it. I understand that the owner was away but there was no sign put up (so other guests continued using it), or direction where there was an alternative toilet. I understand from the manager’s feedback on another review that there are three toilets however on check in we were only directed to one. There was another toilet, which had a sign on the door saying staff only, we used this while the main one was out of order, however this really should not be used by anybody as it has electrical sockets in there, which seems dangerous! I was not made aware of nor found a third toilet.

The Breakfast was basic although to standard for the price paid. However, there were again some cleanliness issues. On one occasion the gentleman serving us lifted up a cup to reveal dirt, he looked at it and then carried on filling the cup with tea.

On the plus point all the staff did seem nice and helpful and the hotel is in a good location for the city centre, although I would not recommend staying at Fatima House.

Room Tip: Don’t use the shared facilities

It is true that the syphon failed in the shared toilet (where shower located). A call was put in to the plumber straight away and he stated that he would come the next day. He did not, due to pressure of work. He came a day later than he promised. The syphon was replaced then and all was back to normal. I accept that we may not have put up an 'Out of Order' sign as quickly as we should but this was carried out later and most people understood that something beyond our control had happened.

It is inexcusable to have dust in the rooms - unfortunately standards drop when we take on new temporary staff who have to be trained. This occurs in the summertime when things are very busy. We train new staff intensively when they join us and they receive on-the-job training as well. There are so many aspects to cleaning that it is very difficult to follow-up on all of their output as all rooms are occupied virtually all of the time with check-ins occurring just hours after check-out.

If dust appeared as reported, I have to blame myself for not checking! I was, unfortunately, away from Fatima House for 2 nights (family reasons).

The Staff Only sign on the shared toilet beside Room 11 is due to be removed. There is no power socket in that toilet (as reported in the online Review).

When the plumber arrived to replace the syphon, I discussed with him my plan for upgrading the shared shower. I expect that a new shower will be in place later in the season. This will be a fully tiled shower enclosure with a large ceramic tray. If possible, I will introduce a wash hand basin. It should be noted that the third shared toilet in Fatima House already has a wash hand basin in place.

The shared facilities in Fatima House are not modern but they work. The standard of the shared facilities is acceptable for a 2* B&B establishment.

We regret it if there were hygiene failings. It should be noted that this type of failure can occur even in 5* establishments (this can be confirmed by checking relevant online reviews)! Also it should be borne in mind that Fatima House only costs a little over €25 per person per night on average which includes full breakfast (worth €8.20). This reduces the gross take for the room to €16 per person per night approximately after sales tax (VAT)!!! No account is taken in this calculation of two other taxes which must also be borne by us i.e. city tax (rates) and water tax (which in total can run to many thousands per annum).

Most thank us for providing such cheap accommodation in such a central location but some do not...

Many of those who like us become friends and they send a Christmas card or an e-mail!
