Our destination would be Ireland. We did not want a big bus tour. Our experience was that the tour size often limited the tour sights due to hotel sizes, restaurant choices and tourist venues not designed for such large groups. We thought of renting a car and doing it ourselves but knew the planning involved, the need to drive on the opposite side and not benefitting from the insight of a guide at sites and between sites when a discourse on the history, geography and overall life of the place is shared with the group. We wanted to see the real Ireland and benefit from the expertise of a well respected operator with a small group. Discovery Tours is a division of Vagabond and features a more sedate travel experience. You travel on comfortable buses designed for 15 but usually carrying 12 so the back three seats are free unless you chose to sit there. You stay for the most part in smaller family run hotels that are three or occasionally four star. All the hotels except one (Beech Hill Estate) Met my expectations. I think they should relocate into Derry so more of the town can be experienced and not deal with issues at this property. As these are mostly historic properties the room sizes will vary dramatically even in the same hotel as will the plumbing which became a running joke as we went along. How do you turn on that shower? The breakfasts served were good to excellent. You were on your own for lunch and dinner with guidance from your tour guide and online sources. Lunch would often be a pub in a town on the journey but we sometimes just grabbed a sandwich from a grocery store. Dinner in town was again your own choice except when we stayed in a few isolated properties and used the hotel. Food was excellent and reasonable. The tour sites chosen included the expected and the unique which really made us appreciate Discovery and our terrific guide Mark. These were remarkable places we would have never found. One of the most popular was a visit to a working sheep farm and meeting the owner, Bridget. A real eye opener to rural life in Ireland. No sugar coating. I am so glad we did not self drive or do the big bus. It was an outstanding travel experience by a company at the top of their field. There were a few optional events that were out of pocket but alternatives were available. You will need reasonable mobility as a fair bit of walking is required. You will also need to take your bags to your room. If you have some issues the hotel and guide can help but there is no real assistance for those with mobility issues. I think the company tries to explain that carefully. Thank you Mark and good luck
Hello phototripper, thank you for your review of your Driftwood Journeys of Discovery tour, some good points there for future guests. You are correct, the hotels we use are small, personable owner owned hotels, with some quirky elements as they range from historic houses, to castles even. The sheep farm experience is such a great honest eye opener to rural life in Ireland, great to hear you enjoyed it. Kind regards, Rob Rankin, Owner.
I've had the good fortune to travel the world in many ways--this was the most spectacular travel experience I've had! Our guide, Darren, and others (including Kim) were fantastic, giving our small group a real flavor for the charm of the Irish people and their magnificent land. I'd recommend this for anyone who wants to see the land, get out and walk a bit, and grasp a deeper insight into the history and culture of Ireland. This would also be great for families or friends who wish to travel at a relatively gentle pace. I'll be back.
Hello JetteMcDonald, wow! From such a world traveller we really appreciate your 5* review. Thank you, Rob Rankin, Owner/
Joined the 7 day Driftwood Treasure Island tour with my mother and we had a fantastic time. Our guide, Pat, was friendly, organised and very knowledgeable about Ireland. He entertained us with historical stories each day in the bus.
We were in a small group of really lovely people. The hotels were fairly good, some better than others but all were reasonable and the tour overall was well priced. At the stops we had just the right amount of free time to explore.
As only breakfasts are included there is some much-needed freedom at lunch and dinner away from the other members of the tour. This can ramp up the cost depending on the restaurants you choose.
Hello cheesy_paws, thank you for your 5* review. Our small group tours are a bit different and we try to offer as much flexibility and options to our guests, we are glad to hear that you found this to be the case. Pat is a great VagaGuide, a wealth of knowledge indeed! Kind regards, Rob Rankin, Owner.
Our 11 day Driftwood tour of Ireland was perfect. Our outstanding guide, Damien, led our small group through Ireland and Northern Ireland. He was a wealth of knowledge on everything from geology and history, to local pubs and restaurants. Each day was filled with beautiful scenery, gardens, castles, quaint villages, shopping, great food and exceptional accommodations. I highly recommend Vagabond Tours.
Hello Leb1949, thank you for recommending Driftwood Journeys of Discovery, our more relaxed paced tour. Ireland is a treasure trove of experiences and beauty. Rob Rankin, Owner.
What a wonderful tour! There were 5 of us and we all were impressed with our tour driver/guide, Rhys! He did a fantastic job in entertaining us with history facts, personal stories, off the road pubs and hotels! Every place we stayed were wonderful accommodations and friendly people. Everyone were happy to engage in conversations and were helpful when we had a problem. Our group of 15 were hand picked for us! A very friendly rivalry between St. Louis and Boston!! We can't say enough on how well Rhys and our group got along! Thank you for an enjoyable first trip to Ireland!
Hello Beverly H, a nice fun mash up of Americans on your tour! Rhys is indeed a super VagaGuide, thank you so much for your lovely review. We are very happy you chose Vagabond to visit Ireland for the first time. Regards, Rob Rankin, Owner.
My husband and I just finished a 7-day Treasure Ireland tour with Pat as our guide. It was an amazing, unforgettable week.
We cannot say enough good things about Pat. He is an exceptional driver, navigating narrow winding roads with skill and ease. He is incredibly knowledgeable about history and brings historical anecdotes to life with his captivating storytelling. He is helpful, humble, patient and kind. We feel so lucky to have been part of his group.
The tour itself was fantastic. The hotels were all lovely and the breakfasts delicious and filling. The itinerary was varied and there was definitely something for everyone. We had a wonderful week and can’t wait to do another Driftwood tour. Many thanks to all!
