I went to the cemetery with a friend who was anxious to see it. We got there in plenty of time for the afternoon tour (no need to make a reservation if there aren't too many people in your group). It turned out to be just my friend and I on the tour. The tour guide showed us around for perhaps 90 minutes. A lot of fascinating graves--the cemetery really is a major Dublin landmark. It's a great way to spend an afternoon (and there's a cafe for lunch and pubs nearby for drinks afterwards). But it's a bit of a hike on foot from the city centre--I'd recommend a cab or a bus unless you really feel like stretching your legs!

Our guide was knowlegeable.witty & charming. This tour & a visit to Kilmainham Gaol will give you a very good insight into the Irish Freedom Struggle.
The visit was not restricted to this though & we were told many interesting stories about all sorts of subjects.
The cemetary is not on the tour bus route (why?) but a 10 minute bus ride from O'Connell St. will take you there.
If you are remotely interested in history make this visit. You can visit the cemetery free of charge but spend a few Euros on the guided tour & greatly enhance your visit.

All visitors to Dublin MUST take the tour of Glasnevin - there's no better way to understand Irish history.

Had a conducted tour of the Cemetery on a Saturday. The guide was excellent and was the difference an ordinary tour and a great one. I have been in the cemetery before but had not been in O Connells tomb below the tower. Its a pity that there are no stairs to the top of the tower for the view. I would pay for that activity. What about a remote camera on top with monitor in the visitors centre? Guide had good knowledge of the Irish history and delivered it clearly and with style.
