We decided to take the Red bus hop on/off since we only had two full days in Dublin. Wonderful to discover that the ticket was not only good for two days, but we also got a free night tour. Bernard, our night bus driver, was a wonderful ambassador for the city. He gave us loads of information on the night tour and, since we arrived early, we had a great chat with him before the tour! He told us several bits of information not on the tour and educated us about the history of the Vikings in Ireland. He claimed his head was filled with lots of "useless bits of historical information" but we disagreed. . . it was quite fascinating to us.

This red (not green) bus and tour was well worth the money. We were even able to add on a bus trip to the airport for a nominal fee. If you get to Dublin, take the Red bus tour and tell Bernard we said thanks again!

We paid £15.30 for this and pre-booked on-line. When we got our ticket we were told it was valid for two days, and the ability to hop-on-hop-off must have saved us a fortune by not having to pay for individual bus/tram journeys between attractions.

On some buses the commentary is given by the driver and those are the best. They all have their own take on some of the paces and some great jokes. Kevin was undoubtedly the best. The pre-recorded commentary is very informative, but a little bit po-faced and could do with livening up a bit. But having said that it tells you what you need to know.

One point to note, due to traffic conditions the pre-recorded commentary sometimes gets a bit out of synch with where the bus actually is, so you sometimes miss a place of interest or its behind you by the time its mentioned, so be alert. We never did see the bit of the old city walls that are mentioned.

We did the whole tour in one go before we decided where we wanted to go back to, which worked for us. But it did mean we only had time to visit two attractions later in the day (Trinity College and Kilmainam Gaol. Fortunately were were able to see more the next day.

What a great and economical way to get around Dublin! This bus stops at or close to all the attractions in Dublin and the buses usually run every ten minutes to each stop....great! There is either a taped version of the tour in different languages (a little lame and the music is awful) or the live narration can be absolutely amazing. Our first bus was the best of all of them, the driver so incredibly funny and entertaining, Greg (I am pretty sure that was his real name), Sean, Paddy, etc. Was very informative, too. The other drivers we had were not quite as good as our first but all were pleasant and did their best to keep the passengers safe and entertained. The Red buses were great but there were more green buses and the very last time we road we waited in the rain by the Jameson Distillery for about forty minutes while two green buses came and went. We were wet, cold and not happy. Maybe the green bus is more reliable because more of them? Maybe the green isn't as entertaining....I don't know.

Having arrived in Dublin by motorcycle we decided to actually have a day off riding but not wanting to waste the day we caught the first City Sighseeing Red Bus at 9am. Infact an obliging driver sold us the tickets early so we were first on the bus. We went up to the semi enclosed upper deck and soon were on ourway with good quality audio commentary. Which incidently is available by free earphone or loud speakers and also by earphone it is multi lingual. The tour route starts and finishes near the GPO on Upper O'Connell St and stops at 23 different attractions or ppoints of interest. Your ticket last 24hrs so I would suggest you do the whole tour then hop off the next time around at those attractions that appeal. Bus are frequent about every 12 mins so there are no long waits. You gain a real understanding of history and life in Dublin then walking around. As well as the points of interest you pass shopping areas of interest are the two main malls but also the specialist areas such as Temple Bar,good for eating as it has a wide variety available.
