Owner description: Rated as one of the most popular attractions in Dublin, a visit to the Jeanie Johnston Tall Ship and Famine Museum will intrigue and fascinate all ages. Over 1 million people left Ireland during the 1840s at the height of the Great Famine, fleeing starvation and hoping for a new life in America. This mass emigration created a huge diaspora of people with Irish ancestry in the Americas, and later in Australia. The life-size wax figures in the museum below deck on the Jeanie Johnston are all modelled on actual passengers who made the journey to North America on the ship. Daily tours begin AT THE SHIP which is located on Custom House Quay just downriver from the International Financial Services Centre and across the road from Jury's Inn Hotel.

We planned to visit this and the Famine Memorial right next to it, and in the same time frame ended up running into the EPIC Museum. Being of Irish descent, these three attractions definitely were a great start to our first day in Dublin. Humbling but amazing to see the shipboard circumstances perhaps some of our ancestors had to live through traveling to other countries.

This is an amazing experience. I thought I'd just go on board and have a quick look around, but there is a tour, and you really get to live the experience - I was very moved by the actors and really got a sense of the awful conditions and harrowing stories of those trying to access a better life during the famine. A must while in Dublin.

We really wanted to see this, as we have ancestors that came during the famine. The tour was excellent! Our guide gave us a very detailed history of the famine, and about the ships that sailed during this time. We had a teenager with us and he enjoyed the tour very much.

This is a very educational experience, but not a cheerful one. Although the history of the Jeanie Johnson was a happy one, this was exceptional. The ship is interesting to see, and it is commendable that this history is commemorated, and the visit was very educational, so much so that it brought the suffering alive. I was delighted to visit, but so emotional was the experience I won't be back for a time.

We did not get to tour the ship as it was closed but we enjoyed seeing her in the harbor. Hopefully the inside is a well preserved as the outside
