“Grim & No parking!”
Reviewed 29 November 2011

We booked this as we were going to a gig in the O2 and it seemed central enough with easy access to everything dublin city centre has to offer. Our biggest problem was trying to find it! If you are driving and unfamiliar with Dublin city be warned - it's a maze of one ways and we spent about an hour driving around in circles! Finally we found it and asked for directions to the parking - there is none - but they "recommend" a parking garage "just behind the hotel" this led to another 25 minutes driving around in circles - they gave really poor directions and finally we called back and they gave us a map, forgetting to mention that there are actually two car parks with very similar names - Drurys Inn and Drurys Inn Underground --- we saw the first and assumed it was the right one - we were just glad to be out of the car at that stage --- it wasn't but to be fair the 10.90 they charged wasn't all that bad (the hotel had promised an overnight rate of 5e).

Now for the rooms - we were up on the 4th floor, which had become like a sauna, with only one tiny window which didn't open fully, nor close properly and was directly above a fan which meant it was noisy regardless of street noise which I was expecting.
The bed was just two singles pushed together (which drives me mad!), the head boards were stuck to the wall and clearly designed for two singles so looked a bit ridiculous. The tv was old with a fuzzy picture, the decor dated and a bit dirty too. The bathroom was clean and basic and the shower pretty decent.

The residents bar was a bit of a find - if you like your after hours that is! They seemed very happy to keep serving through the night - we left at 6.30 am and they didn't seem to have any intention of kicking anyone out!

Overall this is a place for those on a budget looking for a good night out, who want to be near to everything and aren't too concerned with getting a good night sleep. I can understand all the poor reviews here but if you are looking for a romantic or relaxing getaway this isn't the place and nor does it claim to be.

I chose the Mercantile because of its close proximity to Temple Bar, Grafton Street, Trinity College - and pretty much everything else I wanted to see. I realized going into it that there would be lots of noise. Any hotel near Temple Bar is going to have noise issues - expect it going in, especially on a Friday/Saturday night.

The hotel was very clean and was in impeccable shape when I checked in. The receptionist was very helpful. I blew the power in my room with my flat iron and she was very kind about it; it was fixed when I got back. They stored my luggage for several hours after I checked out.

If you are looking for a luxury hotel, look elsewhere. If you need sleep, look elsewhere. But if you are looking for a quaint hotel within easy access of everything with a friendly staff, consider the Mercantile. I enjoyed my stay and would stay here again.

Great location next to Temple Bar area, close to restaurants & bars, tourist info and post office. The noise in the evening and at night was really was really bad in the rooms facing the street, other rooms facing Dame Lane were more quiet. Staff was very friendly with smiling service both in the tavern and at the hotel. A bit dated but reasonably priced and clean.

Room Tip: Avoid weekends and ask for a room on the Dame Lane side.

The location is central but wouldnt stay if you have a car. We had to park in carpark and pay. The room was comfy but average, and the toiletries werent great. Our room overlooked all the bars adjacent but the noise wasnt too bad for a pub.
It was a 5 min drive to Guiness Factory which is a must.

Our overall stay in the hotel was not pleasant.the attitude and friendliness of staff was appalling, staff moral very bad - our dining experience was even worse / with food being served cold and being returned / dirty cutlery and lipstick on newly served wine glasses.the location was good but we would not recommend the hotel ( never again would we stay there )
