Good views just the lack of time to explore the KyleMore Abbey and other sites.

Loving nature and the history behind each place we went to.

We did two tours this week from Dublin with Irish Day Tours on consecutive days. Had we stopped after the first (Cliffs of Moher), I'd probably give the experience 4 stars, but doing a second tour the following day really showed the cracks in the system--and while they aren't all Irish Day Tours fault, they could also make some changes that would make the experience better.

Our first tour featured an excellent guide, Mac, who did a fantastic job of keeping us ahead of the pack--and that's the first thing you need to know if you take day tours in Ireland: you are very much not alone. Day tours are extremely popular in Ireland, and there are many buses from multiple companies all descending on the same rest stops, lunch places, and attractions, and all at roughly the same times. Mac managed to get us to our first rest stop ahead of the rest of the buses, and he was extremely disciplined and communicative about our time constraints. As a result, we had a great experience all day, as we had enough time for breakfast, a pleasant, table service lunch experience, and plenty of time to see the attractions that we signed up for.

Day two, however, we were not so lucky. First of all, in contrast to Mac's buttoned-down timing, our tour guide for the Giants Causeway tour was behind from the very start. While Mac had the first cohort on the bus at 6:15 for a 6:50 departure, our second tour guide showed up nearly 15 minutes late (I'm not going to name this guide, because ultimately it's the system, not the guide, that frustrated us.) When we got to our first rest stop to use the rest room and get some breakfast (essential, because these tours leave before hotels serve breakfast, and there isn't much near the assembly point) there were many buses already at the travel facility. Our guide gave us 15 minutes to do what we needed to do, but the queues were so long that even heading directly to one of the "quick serve" options (Greg's), I was 25 minutes getting a cold sausage roll and was still one of the first on the bus. We ended up spending 30 minutes there, not 15, and had to listen to the guide harangue us for putting the tour behind. First of all, the guide started us in the hole by fifteen minutes, and secondly, there was simply NO way anyone could use the bathroom and eat no matter how expedient they were. There were just too many tours at this rest stop.

The first stop on this tour was The Dark Hedges, and again we were given a very short amount of time--my wife and I are pretty active people, and we only had enough time at a full city walk to get to the Dark Hedges road and walk about a third of the way before we had to race back. Of course, some people were late, which led to more haranguing, and more stress.

All of this came to a head at the Carrack a Rede rope bridge. We were given 90 minutes--which sounded like a lot of time! We went directly to the bridge, figuring we would see the other sights later. However, we just had enough time to wait in the line to cross the bridge, take a few hurried pictures, and then wait in another long line to get back across. It took us the full 90 minutes just to do this circuit without any dawdling. And this time, we did leave people behind. And we had a similar experience at the Giants Causeway.

Ultimately, this second day showed us the real issues with these day tours: there are too many of them, leaving at the same times. Some of this is down to the tour operators. Some of this is down to the National Trust, which seems to have an insatiable lust for as many tourist dollars as they can pocket without regard to visitor experience. But this was a long drive, with a lot of stress from the guide, just to race from overcrowded attraction to overcrowded attraction.

I am sure Irish Day Tours would respond that these are popular attractions, and of course they are busy. But when our bus was full from our first tour, they just brought another. They also have to take some responsibility. Tours are cheap and plentiful, which makes them oversubscribed and overwhelming to the travel stops and restaurants they choose to pack everyone in.

At the end of the day, we saw some spectacular sights--but it's fair to ask: how many is too many? There is plenty of demand. Is there no regulation of supply? Know that if you take one of these tours, you will see some of the most spectacular landscapes you'll ever see. But we had such a different experience between our two tours, and it's all down to how many tours are cramming people into the same rest stops, the same restaurants, and the same attractions. If you REALLY want to spend time at the various attractions these tours service, in retrospect I'd drive to the closest cities and see them as late in the day as possible, after the tours have turned back.

That said, Mac was fantastic and really ensured that we had a great time. But that's because, though it was unsaid, he realized just what we were all facing, and he did a great job getting us out in front of it. The average tour? Probably average. Hence the three star review.

Had a fabulous day out to Giants Causeway, several quick photo stops at some castles, lunch stop at Bushmills with opportunity to visit the distillery if you wanted, and then finished at Carrick-a-rede rope bridge and ice-creams on the way home. The weather was glorious and the scenery on the Antrim coast is spectacular
