This forest park owned and run by the state forest company - Coillte is a little gem for families in particular.
It is located near the hamlet of Farran just off the road from Cork to Killarney.
There is a kids playground there and nearby good clean male and female toilets. There are two trails. The first is called the Woodland trail and is very suitable for families with young children as the enclosure is home to Fallow and Red deer, not to mention a large number of wild fowl. The second trail is called the Woodland Loop and this too, is suitable for families but is longer than the first. This circular trail takes about 45 minutes to walk around but longer if you are with young children or just want a very leisurely stroll. This trail also passes by the Lee Valley reservoir and you can take the children down to the banks of this safe reservoir at a number of points along the route. Even though it's safe, do supervise children when near the reservoir.
My only problem with this forest park is that there is a €5 car park charge and while I believe there should be some charge for the park, a fiver is just too much. €3 is more realistic. You can purchase an annual access card, but this is only advantageous to those who are going to use the park frequently.
Worth visiting though and I recommend
