Although this was meant to be one of the top hotels in Cork city, almost everything was a bit of a let down. The reception staff weren’t particularly friendly, the rooms - although clean - were clearly old and in need of a serious refurbish, and the room mini bar is in serious need of a revamp, i.e. there was nothing in it.

The cherry on top of the cake was when calling down for room service, to be told that the hotel had ‘run out of food’ because of the marathoners staying there that weekend. Having worked in hospitality, it blows the mind to think that a supposed five star hotel could not prepare for a busy weekend, so much so that there was no chicken left in the kitchens. Just astounding.

The random packet of dog hair in the lift (photo attached) was an added farewell bonus. Charming.

The best thing about the stay was location and the lovely bellman.

Let's start with the positive. This is a nicely designed modern hotel. Front of house staff are lovely and the bedroom was comfortable and well appointed,
Things started to unravel at breakfast. On arrival at the dining room we were ignored for a good few minutes before being seated. It's the usual international buffet, but they seem to choose lower quality ingredients. Very ordinary sausages, and how can you possibly serve tasteless black pudding in Ireland? The dining room wasn't the cleanest, with tables chipped at the edges. The lack of maintenance was also evident in the bar. Not a clever idea having velour seating, but if you must, ensure it's cleaned regularly. With just a little TLC and tighter management, this could be a very good hotel. Great location on the River Lee.

Booked at the last minute, even a paid upgrade for a river facing room wasn’t enough to make up for the fact this is an overpriced, over-rated, mediocre budget establishment masquerading as something classier. I know it’s Ireland but what’s the point in having a balcony without so much as a chair to sit on. Bathrooms are original dating from around 03/04 when it launched as a Clarion. Is all the warning signage about bath mats and slipping in baths really necessary?! Empty mini-bar - just get rid of it? Lovely lady on reception, that was the highlight!

Thank you dubandabroad for taking the time to share your feedback with during your most recent stay at Clayton Hotel Cork City.

We feel poorly that you were left feeling so disappointed with your stay and didn't find the value in the room you stayed in. I'm surprised to hear and apologise that there was no furniture on your balcony, as all of our rooms did have chairs provided so you can sit out and enjoy the view.
Please know I will be following up into why this was the case, in hopes that we get it right for next time.

I do hope that you will give us another chance to regain your faith in our establishment as I know we are capable of providing you the experience that many of our guests have grown so fond of.

Kind Regards,

Shelby

My wife, son, and I were spending a week in Ireland to celebrate his graduation from college. While most of our time was in Dublin, we took the train from Dublin to Cork on May 7 for a two night stay. We did not have a car, so I wanted to stay in the city center and the Clayton Hotel Cork City seemed to fit the bill.

The hotel is modern, located on the river and within walking distance to everything in the city center. The hotel is in excellent condition, with large, clean, spacious rooms. The staff was very helpful and the full Irish breakfast was excellent.

We did the "hop on, hop-off" bus tour which meets a block away in front of the City Hall. We toured the old jail, University College Cork, and the English Market. We enjoyed Counihans Bar on Pembroke Street and the Mutton Lane Pub near the English Market. Ristorante Rossini on Princess Street was excellent as was Market Lane Restaurant. On our last night we had a great dinner at the Pembroke Restaurant located in the Imperial Hotel.

The Clayton Hotel serves the business traveler, but did a great job of welcoming us as tourists. We definitely would stay there again when visiting Cork.

Room Tip: A river view room is nice.
