Owner description: University College Cork is one of Ireland’s most prestigious universities. It boasts a vibrant, modern campus with a student experience second to none in Ireland. A learning community where the student is at the heart of everything and the special relationship between student and lecturer is primary to our unique ethos. The campus is located a mere ten minutes walk from the heart of Cork city, a former European Capital of Culture. Cork is listed as a top ten location in the Lonely Planet guide which states it “has always had an unshakeable self-confidence and innate sense of pride”, a description which is equally applicable to the University itself

This was a most enjoyable visit and had a tour with a knowledgeable, friendly German student. It included a visit to the chapel and observatory which can only be visited with a tour guide.

This is one of the 3 colleges founded in 1845 on the Island of Ireland that were once called Queens University. 2 of the 3 Colleges have since been renamed after independence from England. National University Institute Galway (NUIG) and University College Cork (UCC) The original 1845 buildings are virtually unchanged with the Quadrangle being the main focus. I got married in the Aula Maxima or Great Hall within the Quad building. It is adjacent to the presidents wing and then there is the west wing where classes are still held. Tours of the grounds are available and must be booked in advance. They start in the Quadrangle. You can also buy merchandise here.

Another very beautiful building within UCC is the Honan Chapel. Built in the style of Hiberno Romanesque it is a very romantic historic building. Tours are also available for the chapel. This is of course where most people like to get married on UCC grounds.

The Lewis Glucksman Gallery is worth a visit. It has a nice cafe and exhibits award winning artworks within award architecture. And the views over the river are very attractive.

There is a tree walk of the various marked trees all over the original university grounds. You can find it on the website.

If you get thirsty there are also two bars on campus. 70's (I believe) and 90's builds. The older one is called the Old Bar and the newer one is called, yup, the New Bar.
The Old Bar is by the quad and the New Bar is in the student centre AKA Dever Hall AKA Auras na Mac Leinn. Next to the Honan.

We took a leisurely stroll through the grounds on a recent visit to Cork. It was very peaceful as it was a Sunday! The walk brought us down to the River Lee and into Fitzgerald Park.
There is a nice mixture of old stone buildings and several modern buildings. The walk can be as long as you like as there are several maps along the route.
Definitly to be recommended!
