Stayed for eight nights over Christmas. The lodge is in a great and very quiet position on the Oa Peninsula. The accommodation is fitted out to a very high standard and the bedrooms are extremely comfortable. During the stay we got to see lots of wildlife (including the eagles) and experience the wonderful Islay scenery. We were so relaxed by the end of the stay that we didn't want to leave - hopefully we will get the opportunity to return in the not too distant future.
This was our first visit to Islay & it is was a wonderful trip including the delightful Cal Mac ferry which is a super way to get to the island & such good value. Coillabus is superb so peaceful & tranquil & everything you could possibly need. Our two dogs enjoyed the fenced in garden & we enjoyed amazing walks on beaches which were deserted.
Thank you to Hazel for greeting us & showing us the ropes & apologies Hester that the dogs took a liking to the Highland Cow doorstop. We do hope to return to Islay in the future.
I came with a partner and left with a fiancée!
Romantic cannot start to describe how delightful this place is. We both loved the place and relaxed immediately we arrived after a 16 hour journey from Surrey. Everything in the lodge is designed for you to unwind and relax. A large spacious kitchen/lounge with the most fantastic sunsets. The area is so quiet we could only hear the grass moving in the wind while relaxing in the outside bath, yes an outside bath! A wacky but wonderfully gorgeous way to relax and look at the stars, followed by a hot sauna.
We felt the lodge reflected the whole spirit of Islay. A wonderful island full of beauty, history, welcoming people and whisky!
We would love to return one day.
Everything about these eco lodges are excellent. Hester was terrific to work with. The cottage was beautiful, clean and well situated. all of the recommendations we were given for or stay were perfect. We had Chef Scott come and prep dinner one night for us and it was a terrific representation of the fresh food found on Islay. I am a professional chef in California and can tell you that the food was marvelous. I would recommend getting a car for driving around the island. we rented a car from mackenzie car hire and it worked out very well. Dinner at Sea Salt was exceptional! Do not miss the water to whiskey experience at Laphroig..wow! If you get a chance to go to Islay House, do..it is going to be a fantastic hotel once it is completed. We walked to the American monument from the cottage.. the countryside is everything we thought Scotland would be. and the most important thing is that the people of Isaly are just so friendly.. we had the best time and will be back again...I am in love with the Highland cattle...the cutest redheads ever!
To be honest, the many five star reviews for these lodges tell you everything you need to know. There is one three star review at the time of writing, but this is by a person who clearly didn't understand that they were visiting the Hebrides in winter. If you're the sort of person who is aware of where you're going and has some rudimentary grasp of climate, and you're not looking for a beach holiday, then you're going to have a great time here. If you like wildlife, scotch, good food and you don't main getting a bit of rain on you then you're going to have an excellent time.
The lodge is designed with incredible attention to detail, from the double-ended baths to the heated floors to the incredible views. The Oa is so quiet, dark and peaceful that we slept like babies.
It's in the additional services and help that Hester really excels though. Being able to order a venison pie to be waiting for us on arrival was a god send, especially after a cancelled flight meant we were very delayed (and hungry) by the time we got there. The chef service, by Scott Chance at the time of writing, was incredible - some of the best local cuisine with fresh native ingredients cooked by an enthusiastic and interesting chef, and for a very reasonable right. A massage from Eilidh left my girlfriend walking around like a stoned noodle for the rest of the day - the perfect birthday treat.
So if the Hebrides is your kind of place, if you like a bracing stroll with a good meal and a scotch at the end of it, if you like being out in the wilderness yet surrounded by comfort, go for this place - you won't regret it.
