Having recommended the 1808 Bar as the venue for our monthly get together I was disappointed by the service. We waited almost 20 minutes before being asked for our drinks order and, although our waiter said to just call him over when we were ready to order our food, he kept disappearing from sight. When our food order was eventually taken one of our party was given chicken instead of beef as requested. Fortunately she did not wish to make a fuss and accepted it. Another friend asked for the burger which was supposed to come with sweet chilli sauce but this was missing. We would have mentioned these comments if anyone had bothered to ask how our meals were but no one did. It wasn’t as if the bar was busy as there were only two other tables occupied. The food itself was delicious. It was the service which left a bitter taste.

We stayed here one night, while my husband was working nearby. The hotel is in a lovely building and has potential to be much better than it is. The rooms are very dated with 1980 s style furniture and decor. The bathrooms were ok and, in room 36, seemed brand new. Our other room was allegedly superior but all that means is more floor space. There is no fridge and the choice on the tea/coffee tray is very basic. Beds were fairly comfy but all synthetic, not such good quality, bedding. They have recently opened a cocktail bar in the basement which is very smart, air conditioned and has outdoor seating too. The cocktail menu is very good and the ones we tried were really excellent. Unfortunately the food there was poor, macaroni cheese was just pasta with bottled cheese sauce and a sprinkling of Red Leicester; the creamy, garlic mushroom pasta was watery, flavourless and sparse on mushrooms. The steak, sausage pie was better though. Breakfast was truly disappointing, I haven’t had a hotel breakfast this bad since boarding house days in the seventies! Cereal, tinned grapefruit or prunes was seriously all that was on offer before the standard cooked breakfast which was also fairly poorly cooked, more water than egg on the poached egg for example. Tea was courtesy of a tea bag and water boiler. This is not really acceptable in a hotel which reckons to be the best in the area ( though maybe it is) It cannot be too hard to provide yogurt, fresh or dried fruit and some choice of breads, even another flavour of fruit juice would be a start. We had originally planned to stay two nights but our circumstances changed and I’m glad they did.

Just returned from 2 night stay in this lovely hotel, one of if not the nicest hotel in the area. We came for a wedding which the hotel hosted, and I can most def say the staff are what makes this place tick.
The food is top notch, having eaten at the main bar- fresh soup/ club sandwiches are delicious! Dinner in the evening was just as tasty and the wedding meal itself was amazing, not any leftovers in sight!!

We had a room in the main building, which was big and very clean, being a listed building I found the single window panes made the noise from the main road quite loud but this was the compromise. If you are in need of air conditioning unfortunately the hotel doesn’t have it in the rooms, we asked for a fan and of course the staff were more than happy to assist!

The cocktail bar in this hotel is fantastic!! What a variety they serve, and the best bit.... they were all made correctly with the best alcohol, something which is rare. We also had a live band which played some great music.
The place was packed and it was a great atmosphere- you must visit this hotel if only to work your way through the cocktail bar menu! ;-)

It wasn't bad, but it wasn't brilliant. It was adequately furnished and clean, but a few things let it down in our eyes. It's a old property, which in itself does come with problems. The main one being the creeky floorboards. When the people upstairs went to the Loo during the night, we knew about it. Presumably the people below us had to suffer the same nocternal interferance.
We stayed at the weekend and they also have 'Functions' at this hotel. Parties, weddings, etc. A bit noisey, but to be honest, it didn't go on too late.
Another thing. OK, we didn't tell the hotel that we don't eat meat until we arrived, so maybe it was unfair of us to expect something for the first breakfast. But I think they could/should have soorced something for the second day. Frozen veggie sausages are available everywhere and we can't be the first ones to have stayed here.
But it was OK.

We have stayed at the Tontine many times before and is was lovely to see the refurbishment and extension done. The new cocktail bar restaurant 1808 down stairs was very pleasant with live music Friday and Saturday nights. It still has its excellent old fashioned service which makes it so quirky through out, I would certainly recommend it. We even attended a wake there, which was so professionally carried out. The food is good from full Scottish breakfast to a large choice of menu in the evening with many being home cooked, we will certainly return again.

Room tip: Executive rooms are up 2-4 flts of stairs and there is no lift, so not good if you have mobility problems.
