I stayed here for business with a colleague. I couldn't find fault with anything. Check in was seemless and very friendly. Upgraded room too, which was an added bonus. The room was huge, looking out over Princes Street - not deadly silent, some road noise but it didn't disturb my night's sleep and the view more than made up for it. Great quality smellies, fluffy bath towels, robes hung in the bathroom, slippers by the bed.....not much more to say, apart from the huge extremely comfortable bed (good quality linens and quilt too). And the umberella in the wardrobe for your use on those rainy days.
Breakfast was wonderful - the best cold buffet I have experienced in the UK. Hot choices also buffet style, but I didn't try.
The rates are not cheap, but definitely worth spending the extra to impress your other half or business clients, and there is not a better position in Edinburgh

Room Tip: Do not stay in a front facing room if you want silence

Our stay at the Balmoral was excellent. Booking through WhataHotel gave us lots of very worthwhile perks. Our room was perfect and the staff could not do enough to help. It was all you would expect of a 5 star hotel and more. Sunday lunch in Hadrians Brasserie was superb. We will definitely return and book through WhataHotel.

This hotel is certainly a luxurious hotel. The staff were very helpful. One complaint though...I am allergic to feathers/down and had written an email that I could not have that type of bedding. Unfortunately when we got there, it was not taken care of and, I think, due to that we were given a king bed instead of a queen. The room was huge and the bathroom was all marble. It had a bathtub and shower which was different than two other hotels we stayed in. That was very nice. Loved those slippers they provided. The lighting was rather poor. We did not have breakfast there because it was too expensive. There was no refrigerator in the room, but there was a teapot and tea there. We did partake in an afternoon tea which was very good and elegant. I am so glad we stayed there.

Stayed here in Dec '10 for my girlfriend's 30th. I had emailed the hotel mentioning the special occasion prior to arrival (basically hoping for some free stuff :-))

I has booked an internally facing double room and upon checking in Claire was wished happy birthday and we were offered a room upgrade to one of the externally facing doubles. Much appreciated but the room was a bit smaller than I hoped. The bathroom looked very nice but was a bit narrow. Sitting on the loo I had one leg touching the bath and the other touching the cold sink :-)

The rest of the hotel was beautiful and of very much 5 star standards.

After going out to explore the city, we came back to find a birthday card and a small selection of chocolates accompanied by "Happy Birthday" written on a plate in chocolate. An unexpected nice touch which was very much appreciated. I tried to blag it and pretended I had arranged it but she didn't believe me :-)

We ate in the Number One and the food was excellent. Again, Claire was wished happy birthday and we were placed on a nice table away from the majority of other diners.

I dont stay in 5 star hotels very often and although everything was lovely, I do find a bill of nearly £700 to be quite expensive (although it wasn't unexpected).

This hotel is very impressive and regal looking from the outside. Inside most of the hotel continues to impress, but in some places it falls far short.

We had a room that overlooked the castle and the view was worth the extra money. In addition to seeing the castle, Scottish Monument, and city, the room exposure was bright and open with distant views. In fact the windows could have used some sheers besides the curtain panels during the mid-day sun. The room was also good sized with modern furniture that many Americans would recognize as very similar to a Crate & Barrel furniture collection. Although the room was attractive and well maintained, it lacked the elegance of the period of the hotel and the overall look did not come across as a room in a deluxe hotel. The new all white marble bathroom was, however, very deluxe. It was not huge, with a shower/tub combination, but it was very nice and impressive looking. The closet had limited shelf space and was too small to keep a large suitcase in. There was also no shelf space to store clothes in the room.

The hotel public rooms on the ground floor were all very attractive and combined modern touches within the grandness of a classic old property better than the rooms did. There was a lounge room, tea room, bar, and restaurant all of which offered different spaces to enjoy the hotel during your stay. There was also a recreation level in the basement that was a mixed bag. The spa area looked okay. The gym was big, but was set up in three separate small rooms and has not been updated in some time. The pool was very large and looks great with small blue tiles, but it is surrounded by a bland ceramic tiled floor that takes away from the pool setting. Nearby are co-ed steam and sauna areas. The men’s locker room was very old looking and did not look like a space most people would expect to see at a hotel like this. Regardless, it was nice to have such facilities available to use, it was just disappointing that they fell short of the rest of the hotel.

We had breakfast each day in the modern looking Hadrian’s. The breakfast was the standard buffet offerings plus hot items that could be ordered off the menu and still were part of the breakfast package. The food was good and the service friendly and attentive. In fact all the staff was very friendly at the hotel.

The hotel location is just about perfect right between new and old town. Convenient to walk to almost all sites especially the train station. Most sides of the hotel have nice views to look out on too, but there are some rooms that look into a rather bleak looking courtyard.

If you ask, the reception desk will provide you with a complimentary code to use one of the two computers in the business center.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the hotel but felt that the facilities were uneven. Simply put: Five star public spaces and bathrooms, almost four star rooms, and three star recreation areas. Still with its great location, friendly staff, scenic views, and overall attractive spaces, staying here is a wise choice.

Room Tip: Castle view rooms are worth the extra money.
