What a fabulous break. Perfect romantic getaway. Hotel is in a fantastic location, mere steps from all of Edinburghs greatest treasures. Hotel was spotless clean, staff were very warm and welcoming. A simple yet noted touch was staff holding doors and calling elevators. Front door staff especially making us feel like we were at home. We booked a Superior Double Room I had a perfect view of the castle. Room was very spacious and modern yet felt traditional. Hotel somehow intertwines both the best of modernity and traditional. I also requested champagne to be in my room upon arrival and this was dealt with hassle free. There was also a gorgeous hand written note from staff.

Room Tip: Superior Room was personally great value.

Many great restaurants nearby: Jamie Oliver, Ivy on the Square. The Dome is across the street. Easy and interesting walk to the Royal Mile. Staff was very helpful with dinner reservations and local information. Printing Press restaurant was good; a lively scene at night. They were very gracious and managed to fit us in on a Saturday night when we showed up saying, “Help! We’re staying here and we haven’t booked in”. We found Edinburgh restaurants usually very tough when you haven’t booked ahead. Burr & Co Cafe on site was also a nice place for a “flat white and a croissant” in the morning, a nice spot to watch Edinburgh go by. Rooms decent size although baths a bit cramped.

Room Tip: Those in the elevator bank to left of lobby seem a bit more “modern”.

Room elegant and immaculate. Attention to detail really good with lovely little touches. Hotel in excellent central location. Staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast extremely good .On checking in, I only mentioned in passing that it was my partners birthday and when we returned to the room there was an iced muffin and greeting card waiting; lovely touch.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
A modern classic, inspired by Scotland’s heritage The Principal Edinburgh on George Street has been welcoming hotel guests since 1881. At its heart are five listed Georgian townhouses, built in 1775 as homes for Edinburgh’s most prosperous citizens. Winner of Scottish Hotel of the Year at the 2017 Scottish Hotel Awards, The Principal is an ideal base from which to explore the city or conduct business. The sensitive, multi-million pound restoration and refurbishment combines luxurious natural materials such as oak, marble and leather with a palette of colours inspired by the great 19th-century Scottish landscape painters. The Printing Press Bar & Kitchen was once home to acclaimed novelist Susan Ferrier (an equal of Jane Austen, according to Sir Walter Scott), whilst Burr & Co. is a lovely little coffeehouse with a devoted local following. The hotel features a newly equipped gym. Free, superfast Wi-Fi with a maximum bandwidth of 100Mb is available throughout the hotel. ... more   less
